New floor treatment for 1984 LD
Yahoo Message Number: 104485
Hello all, I am new.  Just recently purchased our 22ft 1984 Daizy as a "project".  We hope to have her all restored and shining new by her 25th birthday on November 1st 2009.
We pulled out all the carpeting and want to replace with hardwood flooring or good quality linoleum tiles.  The base flooring is in great shape but there are approx 12 "mushroom head" bolts here and there.
Our floor guy wants to remove these, one by one, shave down the heads then replace them.
Alternative would be to build a new 1/2 inch floor on top of the existing floor and route out the areas needed to accommodate the height of the bolts.  This flooring will add extra weight - not a lot - but extra weight.

Any suggestions and which is the better way to go and why?

Any caution with regard to the removal of the bolts?

Thanks Cathi Tessier

I am considering doing the same on my 96 LD30.  My plan is to redu carpet in the bedroom and cab, bamboo laminate flooring in the living area. I am very interested in how to treat the step region. Any thoughts on what worked, possibly pictures would be appreciated.
Ed I installed a wood-grain laminate.  The recommended installation is to first lay a foam underlayment. This is also recommended for many hardwwood installations.  It's called a floating floor, where the floor is anchored only by base board around the edges. Especially in an RV where the floor can flex, I'd recommend floating install for laminate or hardwood.  Anyway, it turns out that the foam underlayment is just thick enough that I simply had to cut a circular hole for each bolt-head, then lay the flooring over that.  /noel/

Cathi------I just had my floor redone a few days ago in my RB.  The carpet installer pulled out the carpet, took a loooong time getting out all the staples (another LD thing they like to do a lot of) and then was finally able to get to the bolt problem.  He left the big bolt directly in front of the cabinet between the chairs and the bolt behind the chair by the entry.  With all the other bolts (you called them mushrooms heads) he took a mixture that looked like cement and filled them in and then leveled them out flat and waited for them to dry.  I happened to get some wood floor-looking vinyl that matched all the wood.  It lays flat over all the "mushroom heads) and goes over the two higher bolts.  You cannot tell where any bolt is and I don't walk where the two higher ones are covered.  I am happy with the project and now I have loads more room in the closet where I stored my vacuum, which I don't need any more.....plus now it takes me a couple of minutes to sweep and don't have the hassle of lifting the vacuum or emptying it.  If only the factory would give us an option of not having carpet.  I begged and begged for the vinyl but they wouldn't budge.

Wow - thanks for this info Judy.  I'll have my floor guy look at your message and see if it makes sense to him.

My floor guy said the steps are easy enough to cut and use a good glue for either hardwood floor boards or linoleum tiles.  We looked at bamboo laminate flooring last week on a closeout - but when we got back it was sold!  Are you the one who bought it?  We are

And that is why I wouldn't recomend "shaving them down" it would have to weaken the head.

Cathi in Sonora, I am in So. Cal. We have thought about the carpeting detail that is "up and under the bed portion" there is no bed over head on a 30, but we do have green carpeting detail there.  We are thinking of finding a complementry color for the floor carpet and leaving the overhead carpet in place. The furniture is still green so we think we can get by with leaving it alone.  One of our objectives with the wood floor is to tone down the Very Green interier we now have.

If you remove the carpeting from the cab area - what will you do about all the carpeting that goes up and under the bed portion?

We went with a very thin subfloor in our vinyl tile replacement. (Don't like the idea of removing the bolts at all.) Whatever minor added weight is overcome, in my opinion, by the additional security of the tiles sticking to the subfloor without lifting.

Cathi.....I get the digest so I am late in getting back to you.  Sorry.  To explain things further:  the cement-like stuff used was not actual cement.  Just a filler of some sort that was put into the space around the rounded bolts all over the middle of the floor.  It was then smoothed out so that the floor was very smooth and level.  You cannot see any place where they are located under the vinyl.  You can see where the other two larger bolts are only if you are looking for them and we don't walk near them anyway. The new wood looking vinyl butts up directly to the original kitchen vinyl and has a flat gold aluminum piece covering the seam there.  The new vinyl goes right up to the carpet left in the cab and there is another gold aluminum piece covering that seam too.  We removed the one couch in order to have room under it to put the vinyl right up to the couch base.  It is all a seamless piece of work.  I hope that helps better.
