I finished the alternator bracket fabrication. I was able to verify that the alternator does fit on the Lazy Daze but I put the project on hold for a couple of already planned camping trips. Now I'm back at it until completion. I've posted pic's on flickr. I'm transferring the whipple supercharger from my 83 chevy diesel van to the 85 22FL Lazy Daze. A diesel engine without a turbo or supercharger has very poor horsepower at high elevations. I bought an external voltage regulator for the 270 amp Leese Neville alternator and the voltage can be adjusted from the driver's dash. This way after the house batteries has a full charge at 14.4 volts, then the voltage can be turned down to 13.4 volts for a float charge. The 270 amp leese neville alternator puts out over 150 amps at idle. I have an on/off switch and voltage regulator adjustment knob mounted on the dash above the volt and amp meters. The custom air filter box took a while to make along with other mods. The Lazy Daze has a lot of power now with the supercharger. We're taking it to Missouri this Friday to visit family so when I get back, I'll post all the results. We'll be traveling I-40 most of the way. We hope to meet some of you on the way. That's a good way to permanently damage the batteries. While it's impossible to say exactly how far you drained them in the absence of a Link-10 type battery monitor, a steady-state reading of 10.7 volts is way below 50% of their capacity, and that's bad news. The lowest adjustment on the voltage regulator is 13.2v which allowed the alternator amps to max out causing the belt to slip and squeal when first turned on. I had to idle the engine first until the amp meter read below 250 (which takes about a few minutes) to prevent the belt from squealing while driving. With the batteries discharged at 10.7v, it took about 3 to 4 hours of driving to fully charge them. I'm planning on replacing the dash mounted potentiometer with one of a higher resistance so the adjustment can be made at a lower volts. I ran the fridge on propane for the rest of the trip. Billy, you've invested a lot of time and money into building your project LD, but you are also in the process of throwing money away, due to a lack of proper research. As Andy said, at 10.7V, your batteries are way below 50% - actually, about 0%. Deep-cycle batteries will last years when used moderately, or a few hundred deep-cycles, defined usually as to 50% state-of charge. At 0% once, there is already some permanent damage, to an unknown degree. You may actually have now much less capacity for charge storage than you had before your trip. Also, no amount of charge current capacity will force the batteries to charge faster than they will accept it, and that tapers dramatically as the charge builds. If the batteries are depleted, they will charge fast at first, but likely take 8 hrs of driving or more to reach full charge. If the other electrical appliances can take it, or the battery charging is on a separate circuit from the house 12V, you can charge the batteries at a higher voltage. They will, however, then evaporate the electrolyte, which requires carefully monitoring and replenishing levels. A charge-integrating battery monitor will give you a good idea of state of charge, but if you have damaged the batteries, even that will not give a useful indication now. Proper charging is a complicated multi-stage process. There are many valuable links to proper battery and 12V system maintenance at this site, which will provide you with all the information you need to evaluate your system, make modifications, and protect your investment.Steve

I know that 11.7v is too low so that's why I unplugged the fridge to run on propane for the rest of the trip. For rest of the time, voltage didn't go under 12v. I have a xantrex prosine 3.0 inverter that has a multistage 120a 12v charger. I copy the three stage charging procedure by adjusting the voltage regulator. The way I understand it is that I can have a faster bulk charge with using the 270 amp alternator and with having eight house batteries, 270 amps divided up into eight batteries shouldn't be high enough to evaporate the electrolyte excessively. The absorption stage is when the voltage is at 14.4 volts and the amps will decrease in time. When the amps read close to zero is when I turn down the voltage to 13.5 for a float charge. This project really didn't cost very much money. I already had the supercharger on my van that I swapped over to the motorhome. I won the 270amp alternator on ebay for $250. The four 1150 batteries were good used ones from work that I traded four junk ones that was in my garage at no cost. The four 6volt batteries cost $300 at sams club. I bought the inverter a couple of years ago on ebay for $1200 it was a factory refurbished unit. The digital gauges were about $300 on ebay. It did take some time to make the alternator bracket and air filter box. I did all the labor my self and my friend did the welding as a favor as I do favors for him too.Billy J.
