Libraries vary widely in their policies; some are more understanding than others. But there are plenty of alternatives, most of them electronic. For example, most of the books you mentioned are available as "ebooks" that can be read on a computer, an ebook reader (Sony Reader or Amazon Kindle), or an iPhone or iPod Touch.
Like many here, I'm an avid reader, but I haven't borrowed a library book since going full-time four years ago. I read daily, going through several books a week. Most of them I get for free from Project Gutenberg and manybooks.net, but I've been known to buy a book once in awhile. I read them on my paperback-sized Sony PRS-505 Reader, or on my recently purchased 8GB iPod Touch. Many others in this group have also gone with Kindles, iPods or iPhones, or Sony Readers.
The main thing to keep in mind is that as long as you have an internet connection (generally via cell phone networks), there are literally hundreds of thousands of books available to you online, many of them free or inexpensive.
With 3,422 books and stories in my Mac's "ebooks" folder right now, I'm certainly not in any danger of running out anytime soon. :-)

That's a wonderful system, indeed. But if you are full-timing, it's going to be a bit impractical. Maybe you would be a good candidate for a Kindle or the Sony equivalent, and download the books you want to read.
Alyce, you sound like you've done absolutely tons of research. Pardon me if this seems like a dumb or annoying question, but have you ever actually driven an RV, or camped in one (particularly for longer than, say, a weekend)? You simply can't get a true feeling for this lifestyle and the inherent pleasures and difficulties without spending at least a little time in an RV. Books are great, but seat-of-the-pants "tripping" is essential, IMO.

Thanks for your inffo Andy.   I have been following your comments about the kindle, and thinking about how and where to donate some of my books, but am not quite there yet!   I know I will want to store some of my more expensive reference books... and maybe sell a bunch of Mac books.

Thanks for the feedback.

Well, Alyce.  We tent camped for 40+ years. Back in 2003 we decided on traveling for a while.  Did the research, decided against motels, and went to an RV Show in January. Discovered Lazy Daze in a magazine we picked up at the show, visited the factory in February, ordered a new mid-bath, picked it up in October, and started full-timing i it. Never owned an RV before. Full-timed for over 5 years.

So it is possible.   See www. Lazyazers.com   As always, YMMV.

best, paul

That is a terrific story.     I think there are some shows around here in the fall...   I will be attending, unless i find a dealer location where i can just wander around!

Thanks, Paul,   for your response...Take care.

When I was full-timing (20 ya+/-) I found that most public libraries were happy to give me a card and loan me books. Being an actual local resident was not necessary.
I only did this in places I was staying several months, or visiting annually. At various times, I held library cards from Missoula MT, St Simons Island GA, and Key West FL.
I just checked the websites for those libraries, and all still allowed non-local borrowers. Some require a small fee - others don't.
My local Multnomah County (Oregon) Library charges a steep $135/yr/family for non-residents. The good news there is that they'll mail you books, videos etc. for $2 each.

Maybe your local library will do the same.
I always found using a local library a pleasant way to spend some time. They're always full of locals and local information. (NB they can be a godsend on long rainy days, or when its way too hot and you're without AC).

I will get some kind of ebook reader sooner or later.

Cheers,

Rick

"right in this area of NY there doesn't seem to be too many dealers, unless I drive to Jersey, and I am not finding too many people selling their rigs around here that I can look at."
Well, you won't find Lazy Dazes at dealers (unless you stumble upon a dealer selling a used one, and that's rare). And the only show the factory attends is the one in Pomona, CA in the fall. What you will find at shows is a bunch of cheaply made other brands and slick salesmen who'll pressure you to buy right now, because "this price is only good today." ;-)
However, there's a large and active Northeastern Lazy Daze caravan club that meets twice a year:

Their next get-together is in late September in Watkins Glen, NY. Traditionally, Saturday morning is "open house," and wannabe LDers are welcomed. This is your perfect opportunity to see most or all of the models and floorplans and talk to some great folks--good friends of mine who helped me along when I was just starting out as an RVer. :-)

Thanks... Watkins Gen is about 3 1/2 hours from here between Ithaca and Elmira--thank god for mapquest!!    Where would I find specific dates in Sept, want to schedule a hotel and stay over... Is it a two day deal and where would I find the specifics?

Andy, Thanks so much!!

Another alternative while on the road is to peruse the local library's sale bin.  For 50 cents or a buck or so you can unearth some real finds for your traveling library; when finished, just slip them in the bin at the next library you visit for further recycling.  We made great buys in Moab, Mammoth Lakes, and others.  -- Jon

Some good news for those LDers who use the Sony eReaders and who also use Macs rather than PCs.  I got an e-mail from the Sony eReader Store today with this message:
"An updated version of the eBook Library Software compatible with Mac OS X operating systems will be available by the end of Summer 2009 for download to your computer to enable you to purchase, organize and download content to your PRS505 and PRS700."
I use a PC, but I know a lot of you use Macs.  Andy Baird has discussed using some existing softwear to allow Mac users to download eBooks, but this may make it a bit easier in the future.
I'm just getting going with a new Sony PRS505, and wish I'd had it while we were traveling in the LD.
