reara ladder breaking

The rear ladder on my 82 has cracks in both rail pipes right where the bend is below the rear window. Does anyone have an idea about reparing them or should I just replace the ladder?
I'm toying with the idea of building a ladder either out of redwood or pvc. Alternately we have another ladder we got dumpster diving. It's an rv ladder but not an exact replacement and would take some work to mount it.
We also saw a rig the other day that had a regular expanding ladder on the back.
We weren't able to see how it was fastened but it looked real sanitary.

thanks,

Michelle,
PVC isn't all that strong and if subjected to UV, will become brittle over time. Redwood could work, depending on how it's made. Redwood isn't structurally as strong as many other softwood species, but it does weather well.
The ladder might be repaired by TIG welding - - perhaps putting inserts inside the tubes, then welding. Probably the biggest part of the hassle will be removing and reinstalling it, so it might be worthwhile to replace it rather than repair it.
