Discarding the smog pump - Chevy G30

In light Michelle's recent problem with the smog pump, I wonder how big a deal it is to either discard or bypass the smog pump.
 My smog pump is still functioning, but when it goes, I doubt I will replace it.
 Anyway, have you discarded or bypassed it?  If so, please share your experience.

The smog pump could be bypassed but you might run into problems if your state has emission testing. A smog pump at AutoZone is only $70 and not that hard to replace.

As an former smog tech I have to say that I don't recommend bypassing the smog pump because it does reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon from the exhaust. Smog pumps don't rob much power, maybe 1 hp. To bypass it on an 1983 and older G30, you remove the smog pump, remove the hoses to the smog tubes, remove the smog tubes from the exhaust manifolds and install pipe plugs. If you can't remove the smog tubes (rusted fittings), then you can plug off the check valves. Plug the vacuum hose to the deverter valve that's mounted on the back of the smog pump. You would have to get a shorter alternator belt. I wouldn't remove a smog pump from a computer controlled engine because it will cause the check engine light to come on and shorten the life of the catalyst.
