Thanks for Message 102396, City Water Valve Replacement
Yahoo Message Number: 102952
I want to thank Steve K for message 102396.  In this message, Steve describes how to replace the valve element in the city water inlet check valve without removing or other wise touching the outer valve body.
Yesterday when I disconnected the hose from flushing the fresh water system, the valve in the city water connection leaked.  I remembered seeing Steve's post and with a little diligence found it.
Replacing the valve element worked just like Steve described.  My only comment is that I blew the water out of the water heater and plumbing before disconnecting the pipe from the city water inlet body and did not empty the full fresh water tank.  Emptying the water heater was necessary because it is higher than the city water inlet valve and it would leak water all over the bathroom when one removed the brass nut off of the city water inlet valve body.
The whole job took less than an hour including blowing out the water and enlisting a neighbor's help to hold the valve element from the inside of the coach while I pushed the spring and retainer on the valve stem from the outside.
Message 102396 would be a good one to place somewhere in the files section of this site.

Dear Linley - Now that you've replaced the valve go to Lowe's in the water hose section and get a nice brass quick connect set, then in the plumbing dept get the screw in brass stopper - Install the quick connect into the coach city water inlet valve - then screw the stopper into the other end of the quick connect - Get several of the quick connects and make life easy for attaching your hoses - Also you'll never have to worry again about replacing that coach valve - We did this the day we picked up Starr and connecting city water is a snap -

When I key in this message number in the searchable archives, nothing comes up.
Is this the right message number? I would like to print the information in case I might need it in the future.

Thanks

Ellen

Right number, wrong source.  It's too recent to be included in the archives.  If you're looking at this board online, just enter that number in the box above this message, that says "Message #."  The Archive is a wonderful resource, but in the past year or so, Yahoo has significantly improved its own search function.

This message has prompted me to catch up the archives.  I've updated the messages as of this evening.  I still need to update the status notices though....

I don't believe that the connecting/disconnecting process caused this problem.  I had connected the water hose via a pressure regulator and an elbow just as I had many, many times without problem.  I then flushed the system with fresh water, just like normal.  Then, when it came time to disconnect, I turned off the ball valve on the end of the hose and slowly unscrewed the elbow from the coach.  With the ball valve on the end of the hose, it normally squirts about 10 drops of water and stops (since the hose does not have to relax).  This time it continued to run.  So, I know the valve had failed before I unscrewed the fitting.  Somehow, just connecting the hose to the valve and running water through it caused the o-ring to dislodge.
When I took the valve apart, the o-ring was completely off of its groove or seat at the back of the valve stem and covered with something yellow and crusty.  My best theory is that the o-ring had become stuck to the brass valve body and when the water pressure pushed the valve stem back, it pulled the o-ring out of its slot.  Given that all that ever has gone in this valve is relatively pure water, I have no idea of what the yellow stuff was.
By the way, note that a ball valve on the end of the hose is one of the best ways I know to keep from getting a spray of water when you disconnect your water hose.

Hey John - Quiet simple concept which saves having to screw/unscrew the hose from the city water inlet - the brass stopper is to keep dirt from entering the inlet - I'll see if I can get a few pics and send ya -

Art, we ought to pave your path with rose petals, put your name in lights and throw money at you for this voluntary labor of love.

Since I haven't heard of a committee being organized to honor Art that way, maybe the next time you use this fabulous tool, you could click on the little "donation" button in place of sending him rose petals!  (Just a little gentle reminder in case some of the newer folks on this forum weren't aware that this is a voluntary endeavor, unrelated to Yahoo's lame archives, that Art undertakes in his spare time.)

Thank you Art.

Hi Linley,
Glad to learn that the repair procedure worked for you. I didn't think about draining the water heater since mine was already empty due to winterizing.
If you or someone else wants to add this procedure to the files section, be my guest.
