A friend from the NE LD chapter has just purchased an EXPass transponder for her LD and is wondering if the overhang will interfere with reading the signal.
Can she place it behind the rear-view mirror as in an auto or will another location inside the windshield be better. She did not purchase the external mount.

Thanks for your experience and advice.

There may be a problem with the windshield mounted transponder.  When we were getting ours, we were told that we have to use the external one that mounts on the front license plate.  We got ours

Paul,
I have my IZoom transponder (Indiana) mounted on the center of the front windshield about 4.5" up from the bottom. Works great!

She needs to purchase the external mount transponder, which is what EZPass recommends for RVs. It's an inconspicuous black case that's designed to attach via the front license plate's mounting screws. I mounted mine centered on Gertie's grille, where there was a horizontal black strip of just the right height, and it worked fine for years.
Hopefully EZPass will be willing to do a swap if she explains that she made a mistake and got the wrong transponder for her vehicle.

Hello Paul: My FL SunPass is mounted just behind the rear view mirror. Works just fine. When you get to FL this winter pick one up. They cost $4.95 but you get $4.95 in tolls rebated to you so the net cost is zero. Can't beat zero.

We have a 26 foot MB with the EZ pass mounted on the windshield behind the rear view mirror and have used it throughout New York, PA, Maryland and Delaware with no problem.

Ed,
Regrettably Sun Pass is not interchangeable with EZPass or Fast Lane so it's only good in Florida. I will pass on the mounting info to Mary Ellen.

Thanks, Paul

Paul, I called EZPass when I got Enterprise.  I described the unit to them and they sent me a transponder to be mounted on the windshield.
I too have it laying loose on the center of the dashboard against the windshield.  It seems to be working just fine.
I did not use the mounts because for me EZPass is temporary.  I will only be in EZPass areas for another 4 months.
I have not tried it high on the windshield behind the mirror, nor did EZPass send me a bracket and or exterior mounting instructions.

Excellent. I'll pass that info on to Mary Ellen as well.

Thanks to all, Paul

As another NELD member, I'd like to reassure you that windshield works.  I have a FasTrack transponder from SoCal that I just toss in the center of the dash when going through the toll plaza. It works in SoCal and Northern California.  And, yes, the camera is your back-up. If I forget the transponder, they ID the license plate and just debit my account.
My only issue was that Lazy Daze wasn't among the RV options when I registered the RV with FasTrack!

Linda, As a fellow So. Cal LD owner, I have been wondering if I was allowed in the FastTrack lanes.  We use the 91 Freeway portion of Fastrack almost daily in our cars, sounds like we can use them with our LD?
On a related note, are we allowed to use the high occupency lanes with our motor home if we have enough bodys on board? We are new to the RV world and this question keeps commming up in our conversations.

--- I don't believe that there's a specific prohibition against a motorhome using the HOV lane(s) if the vehicle contains the minimum number of bodies -- at least, I didn't find any regulation on the DMV website against a *motorhome* (a vehicle towing a trailer, no) using HOV lanes in California. The laws may be different in other states.
However, why would you want to do this? Traveling in an HOV lane, even in very heavy traffic, virtually requires one to travel at high speeds, i.e., 80+ mph, to avoid being rear-ended. The HOV lane is also very often used as a passing lane by impatient "fast-laners" who zip in and out to get by the "slow" traffic, i.e., those traveling only 85 or so.  (And, if all lanes of traffic are slowed to a crawl or stopped, what's the point of being in the HOV lane?)
I can't speak for others, but *no way* would I ever drive a motorhome at those speeds anywhere, let alone in high volume, fast-moving, bumper-riding, cutting in and out traffic in the "fast" and/or HOV lanes. In my experience, a driver is almost guaranteed to have to make at least one emergency maneuver (usually more), including hard braking, for every few miles of freeway driving in *any* lane, and *controlling* and/or *stopping* a 14000-pound vehicle at the speeds one is likely to have to be traveling in an HOV lane is, IMO, an invitation to disaster.

I'll stick with the "slow" lane; YMMV.
