81-83 LD FL: Front driver side underfloor storage area. March 05, 2009, 03:51:50 pm Yahoo Message Number: 99989I am going to put my battery bank there. It's large enough to hold six or more group 27 batteries and a small portable generator. But it's not sturdy enough to hold the weight. I have removed the fiberglass skirt and the plywood box. Building the new box appears to be simple. The problem is the current door built into the fiberglass skirt: It's too short, making battery maintenance a painful experience. I'm thinking of discarding the skirt altogether, and replace it with a large door, wood frame covered with aluminum skin. Has anyone done something similar to this before? If so, may be I can learn from your experience and not starting from scratch. Thanks, Sam

Your water tank is also in this location, so you will be carrying a lot of mass on the right side, and nothing on the left. Furthermore, all the wiring is currently routed down the left side, so you will have issues with the new runs getting past the driveshaft, etc. If you want to rebuild a lower compartment for the batteries, do it on the left side. I have no opinion on the generator, since we don't use one. However, the storage area would also need to accommodate the fuel container and have plenty of ventilation. Perhaps a lockable box on the rear bumper could hold both those.Steve

On the driver side are the two chairs and the fold down table. The wiring, too, is on the driver side.Sam

Oh well, then, nevermind...Steve
