Recommendations for WA campsites near the ocean?
Yahoo Message Number: 98825
I have company coming next month from the midwest (they've never seen the ocean!) - so we are planning to go to the ocean for an overnight, maybe two along with a lot of other sightseeing -
Recommendations, please, for the Washington coastline -- preferably where they can see the ocean and the mountains?     A place that is rv and pet friendly would be great --- hookups needed (3 people)...

Thank you, Helen LD wannabee, but making do with the SOB...

Helen,
Although I live in north Idaho, I was raised near the Pacific Ocean and miss it.  Last fall I got my "beach fix" by spending 5 whole days at Pacific Beach State Park.  It is perfect if you want a beach experience as the beach is a huge expanse and goes for miles.  It is dog friendly and dogs can run free as mine did.  You also drive through some mountains to get there.  Just take the highway west from Olympia to Aberdeen to Ocean City.  From the Ocean City turn off, take a right and continue another 16 miles north through a gorgeous two lane treed road to Pacific Beach.  It won't be crowded this time of year either so you should have your pick of sites all with hookups.  Google Pacific Beach State Park, WA and you will come up with all the info, map, and even photos of each campsite.

Helen I don't know of any state parks on the ocean that you can see the mountains. Maybe some on the Strait of Juan de Fuca or Puget Sound. Fort Canby/Cape Disappointment State park has lots of beach and camping. The loop next to the beach may be closed but the others will be open.
Also Grayland Beach state park has sites near beach but you need to take a short walk to beach. Pacific Beach will give you view of ocean from RV. Judy do you have a blue LD?? we were there last fall in blue 23.5 and a 26.5 was up some from us but never saw anyone. There also is a Small County park right off Dungeness N.W.R but don't if open in Feb. and no Elec. but some great views. Its just north of Sequim but you have to walk to view.

Here are some places we have camped at. All are on or near the water and are scenic.
We tend to pick places we can launch our sea kayaks.

Starting north to south:
Larrabee State Park, near Bellingham Park is located next to the ocean

Moran State Park, Orcas Island. Campgrounds on lakes West Beach Resort, Orcas Island Camping next to the ocean –launch ramp Good kayaking area

San Juan County Park. San Juan Island Campground next to the ocean.
Historical sites nearby.
Washington Park, Anacortes   Near water. Dump station-good if visiting San Juan Islands
Fort Worden State Park (in Fort Townsend) Near water. Lots of history, beautiful site.

Deception Pass SP, Whidbey Island, Near water and jets
Fort Canby SP, located at the mouth of the Columbia, Washington side.
Great hiking and views of the mouth of river.
Kite flying paradise (windy) Coast Guard Life-boat training school Drive north (along the Long Beach peninsula) to see the interesting town of Oysterville and Leadbetter SP. 4X4s on beach OK

Fort Stevens SP. Just across the river from Fort Canby, in Oregon.
Historical site

Oregon probably has the best oceanside campgrounds of any state so plan on spending some time there, if possible.

Lynn, yes, that would have been me.  I think we were both playing beach tag at that time because you weren't there either when I came by.
I should have left a note.

Just an update on where we went the week before last:

Fort Worden State Park (full hook-ups on the beach), for 2 nights - weather was lovely, only rained very little and only at night (how lucky was that?).   My visitors enjoyed the area, took a ton of photos, and dogs enjoyed walking on the beach.   Then it came down to a decision while underway:  the rain forest or Deception Pass.  They chose the Pass, so we headed back around the sound and up to Deception Pass State Park for the evening.   Again, lots of photos were taken from the bridge and of the lake we passed.  Of course there was sightseeing in Seattle, and also Snoqualmie Falls.
Thank you for all the recommendations.  Marcy and Alicia had a great time seeing what we could/chose of the area, and it was their first time in a m/h.  They said they had fun, and would be back for another m/h adventure (which will be great fun for me, it was my first 'vacation' in several years!)

Cheers,

Helen
