I just won't put out? Maximum range about two blocks. Does anyone know if LD used the correct multiples of coax between the transmit unit and antenna? I believe 18 feet is required; or is it just a short run of coax from the transmit unit to the antenna? I spoke to Steve and he said I wouldn't be able to pull out the coax, but he wouldn't go into much more than that. I like the radio because of the weather stations, but the install leaves a lot to be desired. (the coiled wire rests between the doghouse and my knee when driving, so I have to put the wire on top of the doghouse) Yes, I have long legs. With the limited real estate up front I'm curious about what enhancements other folks made to this all in one unit? Thanks for any feedback.
Best, Jim Pappas In Apache Junction for now.

Don't know your unit, but it likely has a display for SWR (standing wave ratio) on transmit. This will give you a indication of the quality of your antenna match. It should be close to 1.5, and higher than 2 is bad.

You'll need to borrow an SWR meter to check your antenna installation, since the Cobra 75 WX ST in your rig doesn't have one built in. Ask any neighborhood ham, or visit a CB service shop (often found at truck stops).
You didn't mention how old your rig is, but it's worth going up on the roof to see whether the exposed cable leading to the antenna is cracked or otherwise damaged. On older rigs that have been out in the sun for years, I've seen the insulation literally falling off in chunks. Needless to say, this doesn't help transmission range!

Jim, Cobra has a good web site for problems.  Go to support-FAQ's until you get to your unit.  Radio Shack has meters for $30+ as I recall if you decide to do that.

uh that should 1.1 a 1.5 is when you start losing you range and signal anything above a 2 you most likly will start frying you finals it can be retuned at the antenna depending on where you are i could recommend a couple places to have you antennas set for around 10 to 20 dollars.

Thanks folks, LD decided to mount the remote unit under the lower plastic panel by your left knee. Steve said you can just pop that panel off which you would have to do to attach the SWR meter.
The antenna leads that come out of the roof are hard soldered to the antenna. (2006 model} I know what needs to be done, I was just lamenting the fact that I wish I could have installed this unit myself! I re-soldered the antenna leads thinking that may have been my problem.
Thinking back on it now I should have replaced the soldered attachment with a coax fitting, and had a fire stick or other brand of antenna to replace the one LD put in.
I can just see ripping that knee panel off to get to the secondary unit, and then not being able to fit/put the knee panel back on.
What a mess.
Thanks for your suggestions, Jim Pappas
