1982 fresh water pump issue
Yahoo Message Number: 98400
Yesterday our water pump stopped working we discovered when attempting to flush the toilet. We still have several inches of water in our tank. Is there a preferred method of troubleshooting?
I would prefer not to mess with my old pex fittings if possible. I was going to pour some water down the shower hose to see if perhaps it lost its prime as a first step.

The pump runs, just no water comes out.

When this happened with ours, I discovered the outlet fitting on our tank had loosened - it was not leaking water yet, but it would 'suck air'. I turned it a quarter turn to seat, and everything worked fine again.

The gray tubing is not PEX, it is polybutylene, as are the grey fittings. The fittings do indeed crack, losing their flare seal. I have replaced all of them in ours with brass flare fittings, which work just fine. With a little practice, a standard flaring tool will work with the poly tubing.

Hi Steve,
Thanks for the reply. I got the pump working by hooking a hose up to the shore water inlet and turning it on. That got enough water in the lines to allow the pump to work. I'll check that outlet on my tank to see if it's loose. Where is it btw?
I have grey tubing but black fittings. Of the ones that cracked I replaced those sections with clear tubing and hose clamps. That works fine also.

Ours is a FL, and the outlet is accessible from an outside compartment where the tank is visible. Find the tank and start looking at the end closest to the water pump - there is likely access some way.
