We considered hydraulic levelers when we bought KoKo. We decided against them.
Leveling the rig is not an issue for us, but stabilization is a minor issue.  Here is what we did about it.

Here's hoping 2009 will be a good one.

Someone else reported a problem. I don't know what the problem might be. I can click on the link in your response and it takes me right there.

Anywho, it's in the Files section of Life with a Lazy Daze, Stabilization Jacks.

This is the whole URL http://f1.grp.yahoofs.com/v1/4DxdSYL5v-4-RSeswtivQdJc36lolJVMGdulz4v1c9UEaAf2llTz00cIYiMsUMp_dk8_6I-7nS8CAN0n5jJumloomZvpBUTQIk8caAM/Improvements%20/Stabilization%20Jacks.doc On Thu, 1 Jan 2009 18:00:13 -0700, Kate Klein kate@...> wrote these inspiring words:

Don,
That link didn't work for me either. However, I did find it in the files. You wrote:

Perhaps true for some, but not all levelers . . .

I have HWH kick-up levelers, so am speaking from that perspective. I've heard a number of valid objections to levelers, expense and weight are two that come to mind. You've raised different objections, so I'd like to comment on those.

My  control unit is an electronic push button panel that I have installed on the trim panel just below and left of the steering wheel. HWH sells a "wedge" that perfectly matches the texture and color of the dash plastic. With the wedge, I can easily see and operate the panel from the driver seat. Three button pushes and we're level. No toe stubbing - -  ever.

Yup, being electro-hydraulic-mechanical devices, levelers, like most things man makes, can malfuntion. It is most unlikely that the HWH jack will extend and not retract, though, as they power down and then spring tension retracts them. In the unlikely instance of a retract solinoid valve failing to release hydraulic pressure so the spring can do its thing, you can manually open the failed valve, via its thumb wheel, to raise the stubborn jack - the instruction manual shows which valve controls which jack or you can just open them all. (Hasn't happened to me with the two set of these levelers I've owned.)

I suppose it would also be possible for the controller to fail in such a way so a single jack is deployed . . . though I've not seen this failure either and I think it unlikely. The system is designed to deploy two jacks at a time to raise either the front, rear, or whichever side is low. There is not a lot more risk of frame bending than if you drove one wheel up on a curb or higher ground.

If one can justify the expense (cost about $3K for my self-installed system), and don't mind the extra couple of hundred pounds of weight, then a leveler system does have some pluses:

Three button pushes and you're level - computer controlled and automatic.

So easy, we level even for short stops.

Stabilized comfort, even in heavy winds.
Can lift any wheel off the ground for servicing (chock opposite wheels and after lifting, always use blocks or jack stands for safety).
