Big roof vent

Hi I broke the handle off the big roof vent where the rivets hold it on, and then proceeded to break off the end piece, so I now have the entire arm off. The vent is the farthest forward one, 2 ft by 2 ft square.  The screen is torn also.
Questions: should I just replace the entire vent? I've seen them at RV stores, about $200, or can I repair what I've got? And, how hard is it to replace the new vent? My LD is an '81 Chevy 350 22ft long.

The vent actuator should be available at CW, and the screen can be rescreened. However, what is the condition of the cover itself? If beginning to crack at the corners, then it might be time for replacement. Verify that the large vents you've seen are actually the correct dimension, and that they will function as an escape hatch.
Also note that the removal process will be very difficult and end up mangling the old hatch beyond redemption.

The Mothership may be able to supply you with new repair parts. I'm not sure what you mean by the "end piece".
The crank mechanism is a wear item and hopefully should still be available. You never know with a 27 year-old LD. It was still available a few years ago when I replaced the one in our 1983 LD.
As Steve said, removing the old hatch from the roof will be difficult and frustrating.
Unless the frame is breaking up, I would try to salvage the old.

Hi, I just bought a replacement lid for my 26" x 26" escape hatch from shoprvparts.com a few months back. I have a 1985 LD which has the old style elixir vent. It looks to be the same quality as the original one. Cost $85 plus $10 to ship. If you need the new style lid its $102 plus shipping, which you can find cheaper at rvdiscountsuppliers.com. The difference between the old style (90014OS-1) and the new style (90014-
1) is the hinge and the top of the lid has a little different shape
to it. If you go to these web sites, you should be able to ID which style you have from the pictures.

If the old hatch cover isn't too bad it should be able to be covered with fiberglass and resin putting pigment in the resin to protect it from the UV and then even paint it.
