Swivel Sweeper feedback?

Now that Andy and others have lived with this for a year or so, I am wondering if you still find it as useful as it seemed at first? Any other comments? We carry a manual sweeper that is bulkier, and I'm wondering if this would work enough better to be worth the expense, and how long the battery seems to go on a charge after a year of use? Thanks!

I still would not be without one.  We charge the battery whenever the dustbuster battery needs charging, which varies from a week to three.
It is easier to rig the swivel sweeper charger and the dustbuster battery together.  It is so quick and simple to clean the tile and carpet floors.

Good luck and happy holidays

I still use mine almost every day, and I'm always amazed at the amount of stuff it picks up. It works so well that I only use my vacuum cleaner every couple of months. With daily use, the Sweeper's battery pack lasts about two weeks on a charge.

I will shamefacedly admit that I "cooked" my first Swivel Sweeper after about a year and a half of use. Here's how it happened. I'm pretty careful about cleaning the brushes every time I use the Sweeper, but apparently a clump of hair caused it to jam. I was in the process of clearing it, testing occasionally by switching it on to see whether it would turn, when I was distracted by a phone call.
Unfortunately, I left the power switch in the "on" position. Since the mechanism was still jammed, there was no obvious way to know it was turned on unless you looked at the switch... and I wasn't paying attention to that as I talked on the phone.
After my phone call was over, I noticed a hot-plastic smell, and then a sudden high-pitched whine. It turned out that while the motor was powered up--but stopped--for more than ten minutes, it had gotten so hot that it had melted its pinion gear. When the gear softened, the motor's shaft became free to spin with no load; that was what caused the whining sound.
The half-melted gear and casing weren't repairable, so I had to buy a new Sweeper, although I did save the undamaged battery pack and other parts from the old one. This incident could have been avoided if I'd been more careful; it wasn't the Sweeper's fault.

In summary, I still recommend the Swivel Sweeper as one of the best purchases I ever made. It makes it very easy to keep my floors clean.
Unlike my Sanyo 120V vacuum cleaner, the Sweeper stores in a tiny sliver of space and uses a tiny amount of power, so that I don't need the generator or shore power just to clean the floors.

I loved mine when it worked... I have to say the batteries where a big problem on mine as well. It no longer holds a charge:(( I do plan on purchasing another one... Loved the way it picked up animal hair, cat litter and everything else!

"If you'd care to read some information about the Swivel Sweeper, check this site out..."
The negative comments on that page do bring up an important point that I've mentioned before, and should have mentioned again in my last post: the Swivel Sweeper's charger will overcharge the battery pack if allowed to charge for more than 8 hours. The instructions state (in bold type, in a tinted box, so you can't miss it!)

IMPORTANT: Recommended charging time for the battery after completely depleting it is 6-8 hours. Do NOT exceed 24 consecutive hours. Doing so may lead to shortened overall battery life.

Unfortunately, it's evident from the complaints on that web page that many people don't bother to read or follow directions. If you leave the charger and battery pack plugged into the wall continuously between uses, the batteries will fail within a few months, just as the instructions warn. The majority of complaints describe exactly this scenario.
That gives the Swivel Sweeper a bad reputation, and it's too bad the manufacturer doesn't provide an intelligent charger (although that would raise the price)... but once you know about the problem, it's easy to avoid: simply follow the manufacturer's directions and don't overcharge the battery pack. Leave it in the sweeper when not in use, and when it needs recharging, give it eight hours in the charger and then pull it out. If you do this, you won't experience the problems described on that web page.

Thanks to all who replied - I agree with Andy that the lack of a 'smart' charger is its main downfall based on the criticisms. So, gonna give it a shot.

Hi (original) Steve!
When the Swivel Sweeper discussion first came up a couple years ago, I wanted one too. But after reading so many negative comments, I chose an alternative; the Bissel "Perfectsweep Turbo".

A fellow LDer had one and liked it and I think Consumer Reports had rated it a little higher than the Swivel Sweeper too. After two seasons of use it is stil running strong, holds its charge for quite a while, and continues to amaze me by what it picks up.

Too bad they don't spend another $1-2 to add a 555 timer circuit to shut it off after 8hrs. I have a Radio Shack battery charger for AA's that does just that.

All this discussion on the Swivel Sweeper makes me feel somewhat inadequate. All we have is a nylon bristle broom.

Well we do have a battery powered Shark that we overcharged the batteries on years ago, but we have to be hooked up for a day to use it. And we are seldom hooked up.

After a year or two of happy home use, I've just started  unleashing one of our two household Roombas in the A/Bus.  Works  great.  Admittedly, it has a little more maneuvering room in our class A  than in an LD.  But it does the floors nicely while I wash the exterior.

After reading about the rave reviews last year on the swivel sweepers, I bought one for our stick house here in Arizona.  It works wonderfully in picking up black Rico hair on our cream tile.  I bought a second one for my Mom's house here.  Unfortunately, I accidently threw away the bottom "plate" of her sweeper.  The manufacturer has never responded to my request for a replacement part.  So, love the sweeper, not impressed with the manufacturer!!
