Power Steering Hydro Boost Unit
Yahoo Message Number: 97366
I have an '81 LD 22' long Chevy 350.  Wheel base is 144"..
I need a new power steering hydro boost unit.  The LD company was no help.  They don't have the service code numbers for the brakes or steering.
The pedal that goes to the units I can find at Kragen or Car Quest are too short.  I can't get the old pedal out in order to put it in  the new unit.  The new units don't have the firewall bracket on them.
Help!

John Harris (916) 489-7373 (916) 996-9045

Thanks

"The LD company was no help."

John, I wouldn't expect Lazy Daze to have this kind of detailed knowledge about the Chevy chassis, since they bought it completely assembled from GM and just built a coach on top of it. The factory can help you with coach problems, but when it comes to the engine and related gear, you need to find a good mechanic who's familiar with the Chevy vans of that vintage.
As a former owner of a a 1985 22' LD, I can testify that mechanics are not hard to find--those vans were very common, and there are still a lot of them out there, so there are plenty of people who know how to work on them. Your best bet is to call around until you locate somebody who's familiar with that chassis.

Andy Thanks for the info.  I have a couple of good Chevy mechanics and they are puzzeled. I'll probably have to get the old one rebuilt.
C'est la vie!

I'm not sure exactly what the problem is.
The Hydro Boost is a tight fit but it will come out. You should to take the old unit with you for matching when buying a replacement.
Mounting brackets usually do not come with the new part. You reuse the old bracket.
GM seemed to change Hydro Boost models every year or two back in the 80s.
Rock Auto's site shows the proper rebuilt model for a 1981 G-30 to be A-1 CARDONE Part # 529386 or equivalent.

Be careful handling the Hydro Boost. It has a built-in, very high-pressure accumulator that can seriously injure you if you accidentally open it.
Make sure to drain and flush the power steering fluid. Odds are that it has not been changed in many years.
I like to add an in-line oil filter, located in the low-pressure return line to the power steering pump reservoir.
In-line transmission filters are a good choice.
