Replaced 4-Pole OEM Plug Socket

We've not had good luck with the 4-Pole OEM towing socket and plug connection for the tow vehicle.  The smaller 4-Pole plug is just not as strong or robust as a 6-Pole plug.  So I ordered a new 6-Pole plug to replace the 4-Pole plug on the tow electrical cable.  I also replaced the 4-Pole socket with a BlueOx 6-Pole.  This new socket needed a new bracket which cost $6.00.  I enlarged the holes in the new bracket so as to accept the stronger bolts on the OEM 4 Pole socket rather than use the self-taping screws that came with the BlueOx socket.  I've placed two (2) pictures in the Photos Section.  Finally, I think this change was overdue and is the long term solution to a cranky and weak 4 Pole plug and socket.

How did you handle the different wiring configuration? Leave a couple of poles empty? Thanks for the photos.

For our toad, I installed a 7-pin socket, due to needing additional circuits for the hookup. The original 4-pin is not so bad, though, since the most pressing problem is that of inadequate wiring for the task, causing voltage drops. I installed the new socket NEXT to the original, which is still useful for towing other things, such as a standard trailer. Instead, I added beefier wiring and a relay box adjacent to keep the voltages up to acceptable levels.

Hello Sir Chris.  You're correct.  One of the poles is for 12v battery power (center pole & black) and the other is for the Brake Controller Output (Blue).   And you just leave them empty.

I picked up a 7 wire -4 wire plug adapter for the PU when we had a TT and little utility trailer.  Simplifies things a little.

About a year ago, I removed my LDO Forum Photo Album as I intended to place our LD pictures in a more accessible on-line website.  For several reasons, it just never worked out and I didn't keep any backups.  Wish I could help you.
