can anyone tell me what is involved in replacing the furnace thermostat? is thier just a couple of wires back there, or is it more involved.
also, do you have to have a thermostat that is for 12 volt, or will other ones work?

I just put in the digital thermostat last weekend and it works great! I did have to move the magazine rack, but that involved moving just a few screws.
I got the Hunter "Just Right" model 42996 with remote from Amazon for $35 with free shipping.
If I can replace the old one, I think anyone can! It involved hooking up just 2 wires and I didn't even have to put them in a certain order.
The clear instructions told which screws to connect the wires to.

The remote does require a special type of battery, which I haven't obtained yet.
There are other thermostats and instructions listed in the Links that as well:

Hope that helps, Tessa in TX '92 MB - Ciao Baby!

The heater thermostat is low voltage and pretty much the same as the one in your house.  Changing out the old thermostat is easy project.

Remove the furnace fuse or if you have battery disconnect switch disconnect the battery.  Remove the cover of old thermostat.  Unscrew the base plate and undo the two wires.  Mount the base plate of new thermostat.  Connect the two wires per directions, attach control module cover, install batteries, and reconnect battery or fuse, set and test.

The Hunter Just Right and White Rodger models have been owner installed on other RV's and seem to work the best for RV environment, they are digital and non programmable.

As Teresa stated some folks have run into interference with the Magazine Rack when installing the digital thermostat.  The Hunter thermostat is wider than it is tall and the White Rodgers model is taller than it is wide.  Just keep that in mind when looking at the space you have where the current thermostat is mounted.

The digital thermostat makes a big difference with less furnace cycling and temperature swings.
