Warning about Grouply
Yahoo Message Number: 89314
A new website called Grouply () promises that they can make life easier for you by consolidating all your Yahoo groups in one place. Sounds good, but there's a serious catch--several, in fact.
First, when you join, Grouply automatically changes your primary Yahoo email address for all the groups you belong to. If you are currently signed up with Yahoo as , you will become . As far as I can tell, Grouply does this without telling you.
Second, in order to join Grouply you must give them your Yahoo member ID and password. This opens up a big can of identity-theft worms.

Once you do this, Grouply has access to all files and posts of the group, so they can siphon off any information they choose. More serious, Grouply staffers can post or email anything they want to UNDER YOUR NAME--because Grouply now controls your user ID, password and email address!
Let me repeat that: once you join, Grouply can send email under your name. Grouply can post under your name. When you receive messages ostensibly from the group, they could have been sent by Grouply. The security implications are serious: you could call it "identity theft with the consent of the victim."
Should Grouply ever be hacked (and it's a tempting target because of all the individual information it possesses), the hackers will have access to your personal Yahoo info AND that of all groups. They can then post or email spam IN YOUR NAME. This isn't just theoretical: it's been reported that Grouply is generating a lot of spam already.

Because of the security risks to the individual and the group, we--like many Yahoo groups--will henceforth refuse to accept Grouply members. Our one current Grouply member has been asked to rejoin us under a non-Grouply address, and anyone whose email address changes to grouply.com in the future will likewise be asked to rejoin under a non-Grouply address.

A post from the moderator of another Yahoo group I belong to:

Dear Group Members:
I am sending this message as a "Special Notice" so that everyone will recieve it.
Effective immediately, NO grouply.com email addresses will be allowed for membership in the OvernightRVParking Yahoo Group.

Reports are surfacing on dozens of other groups to which I belong, telling of voluminous SPAM sent by Grouply.com, using their members' addresses as the originating address, and being sent without their members permission or knowledge.

There are also reports of hacking of other group members' private information (such as email addresses, which are hidden from everyone on this group but me) through grouply.com addresses.

If you're subscribed to the OvernightRVParking Group using a grouply.com address, you must immediately change it to another address. If you do not, your subscription to this group will be terminated. I hate to lose members, but I refuse to deal with the SPAM that these memberships generate. I also refuse to place the private information of our 4,200+ members at risk.

If you have joined grouply.com, I also strongly recommend that you leave it immediately, and then change your Yahoo password immediately.
