Dometic recall and failure - yello slime
Yahoo Message Number: 88177
I took my LD to Channelview Supply, on I-10 at Dell Dale exit, on the E side of Houston. They did my Dometic recall last August. Really a super RV store.
The young lady at the service counter told me she didn't think Dometic would cover my fridge failure, since I had already done the recall. I said this didn't make sense, as my fridge had failed just as I was warned in the recall. She agreed to call Dometic to get their response.
After a brief conversation to give Dometic model and serial numbers, Dometic agreed to fix the unit free of charge. The service lady said this is a $1500 repair. Needless to say, I was ready to do a cartwheel.
May take a couple of weeks to get the new cooling unit. Thanks to all on this forum who responded to my earlier request for comments. It's nice to know I'm not the only LD'er who has problems.

I doubt the cost of replacing a cooling unit would cost $1,500!
I looked in my Camping World master catalog, and the most expensive 8 cu.ft. refrigerator (which is what you should have in your 30') costs $1,554.45 or $1,399 Club Price.  All the other 8 cu.ft. refrigerators were less than that.
So, if the replacing of a cooling unit REALLY would cost you $1,500 (if you had to pay for it), I'd opt for a brand new refrigerator!

"I doubt the cost of replacing a cooling unit would cost $1,500!" --- The price quote (from "beemermike") likely includes the cost of the cooling unit itself and the *labor* to remove the old unit and install the new one.  Depending on the orignal cost of the cooling unit, how long this job would take, and what the per-hour labor charges are in Texas, $1500 might be in the ballpark.  Or, the woman at the service desk who quoted the "value" of the service could have been blowing smoke and purposely inflating the cost to show Mike what a great deal they had given him! (As I recall from the original post, didn't Dometic agree to absorb the charges?)

Yes, they did.
However, if they hadn't, and if the cost to replace the cooling unit was really $1,500, rather than throw parts at a 6 year old refrigerator, I'd buy a new one that would come with a 3-year warranty.

This site should end speculation on the cost of a replacement cooling unit.  Add tax, shipping and installation if applicable.
http://www.rvmobile.com/ Replacing my 2002 Dometic cooling unit would cost $549 +.
