Wet compartment?

Hi Group.

I have a question, and I'm sure someone will know the answer.
My outside compartment that is just behind the rear wheels, pax side, on my '97 MB has been damp since I got Footloose. I thought at first that is was just an anomaly and that the previous owners had spilled something. I can dry it out, and then there will be mild dampness when I next check. At T'giving I drove through a LOT of rain, and when I came home it was wet in there. I looked at the leading edge of the compartment and it looks like it could be letting wet in there from the spray from the wheels.
Now it has been parked for almost a month with nothing in the compartment and although we have had rain, I wasn't driving, but the compartment is wet. I checked the area at the water pump (Under the sink) and pulled out the bottom drawer under the wardrobe where the water heater is, and it all appears to be dry. How do I get the other side of the water heater to check there? Is there anywhere else that I should check? It's just that compartment which coincidentally is almost right under the outside of the water heater  that gets damp/wet, and no where else.

Your input will be most appreciated.

Have a blessed Christmas and a very happy and safe new year.

Sheila, I had the same problem with my MB due to the introduction of moisture in the bay from damp shower shoes.  Even after removing the shoes and wiping the bay dry there still enough moisture present to cause additional condensation once the compartment was closed.

Steve Newton advised that I dry the bay the best I could and leave the door open for two to three days during dry weather.  Problem solved.

Hopefully you don't have any leaks.

Malcolm, thanks for the info. I hate to tell you how many times I have dried it out! I really thought it was the wheels making it wet, and maybe it is and maybe I didn't dry it well enough. I'd still like to get a look-see at the other side of the water heater. In the meantime this is the third day of it sitting open with a nice wind blowing.

Sheila, Is this the lower ABS compartment that you are finding water in, or the upper compartment where the spare tire is located? It would seem unlikely that dampness could pass thru the floor without getting the inside of the rig wet under the passenger seat as well. You might try using a flashlight at night and see if light shines through a crack in the compartment wall that faces the wheels.

Sheila, Our '97 has had the same problem and despite repeated dryings it just shows up damp on occasion, even in dry weather. We haven't been able to track any consistent conditions, so I hope if you find a solution, you'll post it. We just don't store anything in there for long periods of time.

Hello Group, Our 1998 MB has the same problem.  Our outside compartments are quite dry except the smaller one by the heater.  We selectively store items that are small enough to be placed
