Help: Any Ideas?
Yahoo Message Number: 86898
My 26.5 RK (2002) started to "chirp" awhile ago. It seems to be coming from the converter panel under the oven. I've disconnected shore power, turned off the water heater, and "tripped" all the switches in the converter panel. It does not stop. Any ideas? Everything else seems to be working just fine.

I'm full-timing in it.

TIA for any ideas.

Jeanne

Hi Jeanne ---

Any chance it could be your propane detector?  Figuring out exactly where those electronic chirps are originating from can be deceptive.

And ours became noisey after I spilled a glass of red wine so that a little splashed on the sensor.  After that we had a number of false alarms until I replaced the propane detector.  Not a waranty problem or is it!!  Jack in Reno

Okay, now it is chirping very fast, but it is quiet--not at all like an alarm. After more investigation, it seems it is coming from the area of the oven, not the converter panel. The pilot lite for the oven is off, the burners are all off, and I don't know what is going on. I think I'll go to bed now with the fire extinguisher next to me.
If anyone else can think of a reason for this, please let me know.

Jack, I did not spill any of my merlot tonight. Barbara, I can't imagine that it would be the propane detector--wouldn't that be a loud chirp? This chirp is barely discernible.
Okay, I've just turned off the propane, just in case (but the chirping continues). Maybe I've got a hyper cricket in my oven?

Thank you for your ideas. Please keep them coming

Jeanne

Here is an old mechanics trick I have used over the years to find the exact location of an elusive sound.
Use a three foot length of ½ or ¾ inch garden hose as a stethoscope.  If the sound is really elusive; stuff cotton in your other ear.
Also, you might check your outside storage compartments.  I suspect you may have a piece of equipment complaining of a dying battery.

Take Care......  Erik Holme

Jeanne,
My guess is that it is the converter fan.  Either the blades are touching something or the bearings, if any, are shot.   You may recall this fan runs to cool the converter whenever it gets a bit warm inside of it. The fan probably needs to be replaced.  There have been discussions about it before.

Thanks, Alex. You're probably right. My RV guy is going to try to come by today to look at it. More info:

* It chirped all night and into this a.m.
* While making breakfast, I slammed the middle drawer under the sink shut and the chirping quit! (???) * I reconnected shore power; the microwave works but the 120V outlets under it are dead.
* The fridge is on Automatic but has switched over to Gas.
* The laptop was plugged

"Have you checked the circuit breaker for the outlets?"

Or the GFI switch (I believe that's what it's called)

Duh.  Barry and Kate--Thank you. That was it. After rereading the manual and flipping the breaker switch from Off to On, I pushed the GFCI (?) button and it tripped the switch again. So, I reset the breaker and didn't push that button anymore. (I know my father is rolling over

File under Stupid RV tricks or Possible Campfire Stories

The "chirping" began again this a.m. I was beside myself--turned everything off, got out the manual, looked closely at the propane detector and determined that its green light indicated everything was fine. The noise was louder when I'd open the middle kitchen drawer and slamming it shut did not stop the noise like it did yesterday.(One forum member emailed me privately asking if maybe what I was hearing was a cricket. That sounded good to me: when I slammed the drawer, I'd killed it!) I finally decided to empty the drawer, take it out, and see if I could see anything behind it. Way in the back of the drawer was a Sunbeam kitchen timer that I'd forgotten about. That's what the chirping was!
To think I'd called an RV tech over a tripped breaker and a chirping kitchen timer. Thank goodness I was able to catch him and cancel before he got here and save myself the price of a service call! Every day is an adventure--especially when you're logic-challenged!
It's been an exciting 24 yours, and thank you again for all your ideas.

That's just too funny, Jeanne.  At least you were big enough to admit it.  I think I would have made up some kind of weird tech problem.  Anyhoo,  thanks for sharing the story with us............................

Don't feel bad, who among us has a record perfect enough to have no secrets regarding past performance with our diagnostic prowess? Congrats on solving the problem.

Thanks for the support, Bone. Frankly, while feeling quite foolish, I do feel that I have the opportunity to "file" these experiences away so I won't repeat them. AND, maybe I can help others down the road.
Can you give us your name? I feel uncomfortable addressing someone as Bone or Bonehead.

Geez Jeanne, I'm so glad that you found solutions to your problems without costing much money.  If this is the most serious mistake you make RVing, you're in great shape!

Sure hope we can get together sometime soon, I assume you're no longer at beautiful Seacliff?

Seacliff? Boondocking for $33/nite AFTER senior discount? And no public shower or dump site? I don't think so. I stayed two nights to visit my son and his family. He's a business man, so I suggested that he scope out businesses

Glad you found the culprit, Jeanne! Funny thing--I had something similar happen to me a couple of times, thanks to a spare kitchen timer I had in a drawer. When bumped, it started beeping. Fortunately, in my case the beeping happened right away, while I had the drawer open, so it wasn't *too* much of a mystery. I was lucky. ;-)

Okay, Todd. Nice to meet you! I'll call you Todd from now on--not "bone" or "bonehead." Do sign all your posts with "Todd" so we know who you really are. Also, based on your very kind response to my posts, you obviously aren't a "bonehead" ;-)

Thanks, Andy. Since my timer has a magnet on the back. I will clamp it to the vent hood instead of shoving it into a drawer and, hopefully, not have this problem again. (Oy vey, there's so much to learn!)

We have found it easiest to stick our magnetic timers up inside of the vent hood, on the sides
