Count your blessings!

Over the past year or so, I have been monitoring this forum and have found alot of information pertaining to Lazy Daze Motor Homes. The information gleaned from this website resulted in my choosing a 2007 30'IB (no prior visit to the factory)with which I was hoping to retire after 24 years with The Boeing Company and hit the road full time. The plan was (and still is)to custom paint my Lazy Daze in a patriotic theme and to travel around the country supporting those who make the supreme sacrifice by serving in our country's Armed Forces.
I am a veteran of an unpopular war in Southeast Asia and know what it is like to be unappreciated and forgotten and want to do my part for those who have put their lives on hold to preserve the American dream of freedom for all. I would not want for any of them to experience one day of what I have experienced in the last 40 years.
Alienation, remorse, guilt...all feelings experienced by those of us perceived to be baby killers, drug addicts and now filling the back streets and alleys of our nation's cities as "the homeless". One in four of the homeless on the streets today is a veteran.
Now to get back on topic...In June of this year, I ordered my Lazy Daze and after a couple of subsequent "add fees" I was comfortable in my selections for my new coach. Anticipation was high and all I could think about was preparing for the day I would drive my new coach home.
(original delivery date was to be the 3rd week in October) I constructed a covered parking area next to my house. Had power lines raised and trees trimmed so that my new coach would fit safely beside my house. Bought a new GPS unit, laptop, bedding, dishes and a multitude of other items that the LDers on this forum had suggested in their posts. Also, purchased a copy of EUREKA from Andy hoping to make my LD even better. Everything I thought that I would need to make my Lazy Daze a home away from home. Around the 2nd week of September, Lazy Daze informed me that they were running a bit behind and that they would have to push out my delivery date a couple of weeks. I graciously accepted this delay and told them that, if it would help them, that I could defer my delivery for the day before Thanksgiving. They seemed appreciative with the extra "wiggle room".
This would also give me the opportunity to stop in San Jose on the way home to Seattle to have Thanksgiving dinner with my mother, brother and his wife. Also, I could show them my new Lazy Daze! Delivery day was fast approaching and I made my airline reservations for the evening before delivery staying at the Red Roof Inn Ontario for pick up on delivery day by Lazy Daze. I made sure that my insurance policy was in effect and waited for the big day to begin drifting in and out of sleep.
8:15 am on delivery day, Dave showed up, stowed my bags in the van and we headed for the factory.
As we pulled into the factory lot, there she was! My brand new blue 30'IB that I had named "Tru Blu". To say the least, I was excited! Dave and I spent the next couple of hours with the orientation and everything looked great. So we went inside the office for the paperwork phase and after about another hour and the presentation of a $95,000.00 cashier's check,I was given directions to the gas station and interstate and away I went! Driving north on I-5, stopped for gas in or near Buttonwillow and had a bite to eat knowing that in a couple of hours I would be giving "the tour" of my motor home to my family members in San Jose.
I curbed my enthusiasm as I still had a ways to go before arriving at my brother's house. My GPS was right on target and led me through the maze of on and off ramps to arrive at the last left turn that would bring me to the front of my brother's house. Waiting at the stop light for the left turn signal, I noticed a female police officer to my left waiting for her light to change. I was given the green light first and proceeded to make my left turn being careful not to "clip" the police car as I turned left.
I then heard a screeching of tires and was immediately impacted on the left side of my motor home by a vehicle that was coming up from behind me doing 100mph plus (or so the officer stated, she having a "front row seat") It seems that the car had 3 people in it and they had just come from a pizzeria where an altercation amongst them and some other people had left one of the occupants of the car that hit me stabbed in the abdomen. The driver of the vehicle that slammed into me was trying to get the woman to a hospital. Another woman sitting in the front seat was tending to the stabbed woman in the back seat when the accident occurred. The woman in the front seat impacted the windshield which impacted the side of my motor home and she was killed instantly. The driver and stabbed woman were taken to local hospitals and their conditions are still unknown to me at this time.
Now, it is up to the authorities and insurance companies to determine how long it will be for me to become whole again. Best case scenario would be for the frame to be bent and the motor home totaled allowing me to start anew. Worst case scenario for me would be that the motor home be deemed repairable and I will have paid top dollar for a wrecked and repaired motor home.
San Jose Police have "custody" of the motor home at this point in time and have eluded to the fact that because of the events prior to the accident that it may be some time before they are able to release Tru Blu. The insurance companies have not been given access to the unit as of yet to determine the extent of damage.
Meanwhile, I will continue to make payments for a motor home I have no access to.
It saddens me that there was life lost but I am having a hard time understanding the thought process that went into rushing this woman to the hospital when 911 is there for these eventualities.
Preliminary reports from several sources indicate that drugs and or alcohol was involved.
So, count your blessings, fellow Lazy Dazers...Things could be worse!

Ken:  Hard to know what to say except that I'm certain all of us are horrified by your tale and are rooting for you to come out on top.   You are living a bureaucratic nightmare ...  in addition to being a victim of being where you were entitled to be and doing what you were supposed to, just exactly in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Is there any hope of help if you were to contact your local city councilman/mayor (or whatever they are in your locale) for help with the Police Commissioner to release your LD?...and help from contacting the state Insurance Commissioner to get your claim truly underway...and help from contacting your state legislature's district's/region's representatives and senators, as well as the US Senators/Representatives from your state to move the above along?  And then there's the Banking Commissioner to address the issue of the loan...of course, I haven't read your loan documents and insurance documents (haven't read all of mine), but maybe there's something in the fine print that no one has been honest enough to point out to you?  Possibly a talk with an insurance adjuster to see how they've been able to get "around" these kinds of situations and how these things have been worked out in the past?
When you write (calling may not capture the essence of the problem in a way that a harried office worker may comprehend), be sure to attach copies of the newspaper articles...and certainly note copies (and send them) to the other parties (Police Commissioner, Senators, Representatives, etc.)  And send them, each and all, Certified Return Receipt Requested...I know this is asking a lot of you on top of what you've already been asked for in life, but I've found this brings more success than just phone calls.
Do any of your local television/newspaper channels have consumer reporters?  You're not asking to get in the way of a serious police investigation, but to not allow a responsible insurance adjuster to look at and photograph your unit seems a bit excessive...and this sounds like a consumer story to me...after all, sounds like you and your LD are being held hostage to a bureaucratic snarl.
Best wishes and do let us know how things begin to sort out for you, as well as letting us know when you're able to finally hit the road to accomplish your mission.

Kent (I believe that's your name)

What a horrible, sad tale, I wish there was something I could say other than how sorry I am to hear your story.

We all have so much to be thankful for, this is just a reminder.
Please keep us up on this as it unfolds, you will certainly be in my thoughts.

I'm so sorry to hear of your experience, Bob! Tina's suggestions are excellent ones, and perhaps the members of this group who've worked in law enforcement can offer additional tips. I hope you get Tru Blu back on the road soon!

You and my father deserved better leadership and a better cause. My nephew deserves better leadership and a better cause. The willingness of young people to sacrifice for their country are a scarce commodity, and we are weaker when their strength is mis-spent.

Though we might disagree politically, never doubt my respect for you or your efforts. The best man I've ever known, my father, was a 22 year Navy veteran (1958-1980), a corpsman who served with the Marines.

Jim, Seems to be a 5-6 month backlog at the San Jose Coroner's office and until they finish their investigation they will not release the motorhome. The defense team may also want to keep the motorhome as evidence pending trial. Am told this could take years to resolve. I am getting absolutely nowhere what with all the agencies that are involved. Meanwhile, I have been off work since 12-11-07 and

Bob picked up his blue 2008 27RB in mid-September, had it "enlightened" with LED tail lights, stopped at Banks, the Tireman, AM Solar, Hendersons, and made it home to Kent, Washington with his tricked out rig. I hope he posts the story of his trip home when he has time.

That's certainly not the story he tells: " I then heard a screeching of tires and was immediately impacted on the left side of my motor home by a vehicle that was coming up from behind me doing 100mph plus..."  Are we, perhaps, talking about two different Bobs?

Terry has it correct....
The insurance company totaled the 30' IB in April 2008 and I immediately flew back to the factory to take a closer look at other models deciding on the 2008 27'RB for delivery Sept 19. (smaller target for those late night partyers).
Had a wonderful trip back from the factory to Seattle meeting Terry the day after delivery up in the San Gabriel Mtns to become enlightened. Terry also installed the coul on my water heater that allows me to run the water heater without using LP when on shore power
Spent the weekend with him at his secret hideaway watching him crawl under the MH doing his thing wite LEDS..Great guy and very knowledgeabe.
Monday the 22nd, I spent the day at Banks having the Power Pack installed. and they finished by the end of the day.
I then headed for Ridgecrest, spending the night at the Tireman waiting for my tire extensions to be installed the following morning.
That done, I had a "leveler" install scheduled for the 29th of Sept @ Henederson's Lineup in Grants Pass, Oregon so I had a few days to get there. Decided to go through Gold Country via US 395, 88,89,50 into Placerville and then 49 to Coloma, Ca where I spent 3 days at Sutter's Mill panning for gold in the American River...Actually, found about $26  worth of gold and lot's of beautiful garnets. Not bad for a "rookie".
I got to Grants Pass on Saturday so had the weekend to explore surrounding attractions...Took a fishing charter on the Rogue River, weather was in the 85/90 range and the fishies seemed to be sleeping all day...
Leveler install completed on Tuesday and then it was onto AMSolar in Springfield, Oregon where I spent 2.5 days having 2 more solar panels installed and the wimpy inverter that LD provides was replaced with a 2000W Pro-Sine to handle the 4 panels that I now have.
The whole trip the weather was 80+ degrees until I crossed over into Washington State...Gray, rainy, and very cool...I knew I was very close to home!
Now at home, the next install will be the tow package for the Jeep Wrangler that I plan on using as a toad...
Thanks for asking for an update...It's been interesting to say the least!

We've driven SR-49, too, and have visited Sutter's Mill.  Have always wanted to do the drive again and take more time exploring the historic areas along this road!

Just a reminder, folks--these kinds of "Let's meet up" messages really belong in personal emails, not in posts to the group.
