Jalama Beach November 11, 2007, 10:56:30 am Yahoo Message Number: 85798Dear Group, We are leaving on Thursday for a ten day trip. One of our planned stops will be a couple nights at Jalama Beach before going to our daughter's house in Buellton. Have any of the group camped at Jalama? Would you recommend it? Do you think we will have any problems finding a camp site if we arrive around mid day on Monday, November 19th. Thanks in advance for your help. Robert "Sandy' Brownson 2007 FL 23.5' Silver Cloud

It's the off season and midweek. Do not try this in the summertime, you may be disappointed.Larry

I hope LarryW comments, because he and Renee are the experts. This time of year a winter storm could roll through at any time. (a front is moving trough this morning). ALWAYS expect wind. We like Jalama, because there is hardly any development in the area. Take your time, it's 14 miles of narrow curvy road once you leave Hwy-1. There are a few sites right next to the beach. The electric sites are up on the hillside overlooking the bay. The rates at Jalama are going up as of 11/19/2007 (). Getting in mid-day on a Monday probably won't be a problem this time of year, except it looks like you are arriving just before Thanksgiving. Be sure to try a "Jalama Burger" after a long walk along the beach.Art and Barbara Solvang, California

Do you think we will have any problems finding a camp site if we One of the attractions of Jalama is its proximity to Point Conception - south of that the coast turns eastward. This is a great perspective to catch sight of passing sea life as they approach the coast near the point. A few years ago during a group meet, from our campsites on the bluffs, we spotted pilot whales in the breakers alongside human surfers. Gray whales are often seen in the winter. At low tide, you can walk miles down the beach, but not far in any other direction.Steve

It is one of the greatest beaches on the California coast. Bring your camera and walk slow on the beach. It is great!!Chris Hunter

Be sure to check the tide tables to prevent getting shut off by a rising tide. Take lunch and water, it can take several hours to make the round trip especially when the famous Jalama wind starts blowing. 50-70 MPH winds are not uncommon and all experienced Jalama campers have spend hours and days waiting out the winds. For the surf fishing types, the best catches come from the sloped beaches under the lighthouse, during a rising tide.Larry
