Emergency Parking Brake Leak
Yahoo Message Number: 85724
About a year ago there was a discussion concerning oil leaking from the parking/ emergency brake housing. ( i.e. messages 58,944  59,027  71, 238  71,245  71,250 ) A couple of days ago we took our 02 RB in to the local (Portland, OR.) Ford Truck Service Center ( Northside Group inc.) for a routine transmission and cooling system flush. As you have probably already guessed, they discovered the above mentioned leak. A lot of discussion ensued including why not just replace the seal ( "Ford will only replace the whole assembly" ) but the following quote helped pry open my check book: "This unit ( Parking Brake Assembly ) holds approximately 4 oz. of fluid that lubricates the bearings inside. When there is not enough lubrications it can cause the unit to lock up and cause damage to the tail shaft of the transmission and or the driveline." Because of the safety issue and since my driveline is still covered by the original warranty - which would be voided if the fore mentioned damage occurred - ( and I had not corrected the leak ) I approved the $1,283.00 expense. ( $204.00 labor n $1,079 brake assembly. Mileage was 34,400 ) The parking brake assembly is the size a squashed basketball and sits just back of the transmission and connected with the driveline.  I've posted a photo at: http://autos.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/lifewithalazydazerv/photos/view/2a85?b=1 Upon returning home from Ford we examined the driveway where "Merlot" often sits, when not in the barn, for any oil drips. Knowing what we were looking for, we were able to detect some light oil circles about the size of a silver dollar. I had done a "tightening" of the floor bolts as per Larry Wade's suggestion this Summer and did not see any oil spray at that time . .  but I wasn't looking for any either. That suggests the leak may have only recently occurred. The only other possible item of interest may be that I can't remember the last time I ever used the Emergency Brake ? Hope this information might aid someone, sometime.

As an aside, while we were at Ford both the licensed technician and the service adviser made separate reference to having checked to see if there were any recall notices on our vin number. They made no mention of the current discussion of cruise control issues ?

Please tell me that you remembered reading my request for a defective emergency brake. Ever since Jonna's has the same problem I have wanted to take one apart to see if the seal and bearing can be replaced.
If your driveline is still under warranty, why did you have to pay for it?

Bill,

Thank you for posting on this topic.
Terry Tanner has done a write up on parking brake maintenance on his yahoo  group Technoz website.  Here is a link to his writeup.

My guess is that you would have to be logged into that group to view the writeup.

Sort of an over-simlified summary his advice would be:

1) Do not drive with the parking brake on.  It is very easy to forget  that it is on.  Terry also gives instructions for a parking brake on  reminder buzzer.

2) Keep the parking brake housing filled to the proper level with the
proper fluid. This is detailed in his writeup.

He also has a picture of it which shows the fill plug.  His picture looks somewhat different than your.
If your LD is under Ford warranty (less than 3 years and 36,000 miles) shouldn't Ford pick up the cost of replacing the unit? Maybe I didn't understand something about your situation.

Thanks again.

Ken

The link did not work.
Try this one.

The plug, on the side of emergency brake is almost impossible to see on most models. You need to locate it with your hand.
When taking you rig in for maintenance work, print out Terry's file and take it with you. Most Ford dealer are clueless when it come to this rare part.

We tried both of these links and they didn't work.  Do you have a web or yahoo address that I can put in myself?

Thanks,

John and Linda

The description on the home page explains the purposes and workings of the group, and Terry Tanner's "lessons" (in PDF format) are found in the "Files" section.

Is this the Technoz Yahoo Group? http://in.groups.yahoo.com/group/technoz_msc_it_2006/

If this is the correct group, the reason a link to it won't work is that you have to be a member of the group to get to the files and database.

If you join the group and you are logged in, the link should work.

Ahhh..."Techsnoz" was misspelled in the previous posts, so my search on Yahoo Groups came up with an entirely different group.  However, you still have to join the group in order to have access to the Files...that's why a direct link to the Files won't work for those people who are not members of that Yahoo Group.
