In looking to produce your own fuel there are at least three possible options ethanol, vegetable oil and hydrogen. All three require a raw material, a process (requiring energy), a method for storage and modifications to your vehicle.
For ethanol there is a company selling a still (moon shine) to produce vehicle fuel. They sell a kit for about $1400 or plans for about $50. They have a web site but I have not been to it. They claim you can buy all products (bushels of corn) and the fuel for distillation for less than a dollar per gallon. In this country they mix 20%methanol with 80% gas while in Brazil they mix 80% ethanol with 20% gas.
Vegetable oil can be used as a direct replacement for diesel. What you hear the most of is getting fry oil from restaurants. Now this needs to be filtered and vegetable oil coagulates when it gets cold so in cold weather it has to be kept warm. This requires minimal modification except some add a tank for the vegetable oil in addition to the diesel tank. One might be able to produce oil from corn I have not seen anything on doing this.
Generating hydrogen is easy with DC electricity. But storing and converting may be problematic. And the cost of the electricity may be a deterrent.
If something along these lines is done one needs to consider where they are going to get fuel when away from home. Ethanol or perhaps methanol are replaceable with gas and vegetable oil is directly replaceable with diesel.
There is no free lunch but there are options to supporting the oil companies.

what about natural gas?  Has anyone used this?  or know if there's a conversion kit on the market?

If I eat certain foods, like onions, I go into full after-burner. By anyone's definition this is "Fuel, Self made" and could also be considered natural gas, I suppose. In anycase, I've found no real use for it that's not exceedingly offensive (g).

bumper, if you put your mind to it, I'm sure you could come up with a way to tap into that potential energy source! ;^)

Bumper, you sound like our kind of folks!  Actually, my brother has a gas well on his property and never uses anywhere near his monthly allotment.  I've seen buses that run on (liquid?) natural gas and wondered if anybody ran a motorhome on this and how they convert it.  We found a '79 Holiday Rambler (not a LD, but well within our price range) and were thinking about possibly converting it to LNG.  BTW, the Rambler's all original, right down to the SHAG carpeting on the ceiling and walls, and it's name will be Whirligig.

Sorry to be so late on chiming in on this one, but I've been gone.
When Pete and I were in China last month, we visited a farm in So.
China, and they used methane from animal poop that was stored underground, to cook with. I saw the hose and burner, with mine own eyes, but gratefully, did not see the source.

I don't have a clue about the details of this arrangement, but was impressed with the whole idea. No no, there's no smell when burning methane - it's odorless.
Maybe it was something like this, http://tinyurl.com/mgbja only more primitive.
