Just in case anyone spots a red & white 2005 LD on a Ford dealer's lot near Toledo, OH, it's NOT for sale.  It has a faulty "processor" in its engine, according to the mechanic.  Since it's less than a year old, with 12,500 miles on it, Ford pays for everything, including a loaner car to get us home, and until the LD is repaired.  The "processor" is a $700 part, supposedly the "brain" of the engine.
It's been there a week now, alas.

And what were the symptoms that led to this?

It was running fine for two days preceding the event.  All we did
was turn the engine off, have lunch, and turn it on again.  When we turned it on, it showed an amber engine-shaped symbol and an amber wrench-shaped symbol on the dash display, and it "chugged" - it would move, but ever so slow; no power at all.  We limped down the street to a very conveniently located Ford dealer.  No symptoms beforehand at all.
