Route from Knoxville, TN to Dallas, TX

We will be leaving Nova Scotia in another week or so and after spending 2 weeks or so with our daughter and her husband in NYS we will cross the country to our house in southern CA.  We want to get out west as quickly as possible and give us 10 days to do so at a comfortable pace.  There is one elderly friend to visit in Dallas.  I do not have my maps with me but I have previously used I-40 to I-30 to Dallas.  I would like to try some new roads and am considering going south from Knoxville and picking up I-20 which crosses northern AL and LA and will then take me directly into Dallas.  However, was northern AL and LA affected by the recent hurricanes?  Is I-20 a decent road?  Any advice?
