What wears out at 60k miles?
Yahoo Message Number: 57726
I've been searching all morning on our wonderful search engine but, like many things, it is a 'garbage in, garbage out' problem.  I'm not coming up with the right search words.  I remember reading a while back that there was something that wore out around 60k miles. I thought it was a bushing but no luck searching under that or bearing or bearings... I did find a reference to the Chevy engines and U Joints but we have a Ford E450, V10, 2001.  Did I imagine this thread? Is there something in the front end that commonly wears out around 60k miles and that I should have inspected?
Tortuga actually has 70k miles but I had this in the back of my mind and wanted to have it checked, whatever it was.

The only 60,000 mile specific item in the owners manual (Pg 37) for my 2003 states to inspect & lube the U-Joints as required at 60,000 miles.
However many items should be looked at as the more frequent service items accumulate. (Example 2nd automatic transmission service is due at 60,000 and the 4th lubrication of the Ball Joint areas)

We have had all of the recommended servicing done on schedule.  This was something not mentioned in the manual.
Thanks Arne for the serpentine belt suggestion, I will check when we last had all of the belts replaced.  That wasn't what I remember though, perhaps it was the ball joints.  I thought it was a bushing but I guess not.

Go to www.ford-trucks.com  register and ask the question on the van fouum.
If the LD chassis had been serviced acording to schedule not much would be worn out. Soft items, belt, as mentioned, top radiator hose, coolant change. I've  seen universal joints start to go bad at that mileage--look for them throwing rust. I would check all brake pads. If you are

Good info Ray, I will check on the forum you gave.

The radiator harness was changed just before 30k miles as it was wearing on something

Hi Jonna
You friend was probably right about the air sensor.  After I cleaned and oiled my K&N filter, I also fouled the air mass flow sensor and had to be towed to a Ford truck dealer. It was then that I read the on-line evaluations of air filters and threw the K&N away - still use the oil filters, though.

Good luck

Gus, I recall your experience with the K&N air filter.  I have one on my 2002 but have never cleaned it.  Surely there is a way to do that without fouling the air mass flow sensor.  Do you recall which on-line evaluations you read which made you discontinue use of the K&N?

Chris:

The report on air filters is at http://home.usadatanet.net/~jbplock/ISO5011/SPICER.htm.

In my case, when it came time to clean and re-oil I paid close attention to the instructions that said to make sure every part of every fold was red (the color of the oil) and also the injunction to not over oil (though it didn't say why not).  Nonetheless, where there were "holes" in the color, I carefully filled them with a hypodermic needle so as not to overoil, and blotted each fold after oiling to make sure there was not too much oil. But there was.

When I read that report, I went back to Ford filters.

Hope everything is well with you.

Gus

I'm not Gus, but also received the '404' error message until removing the period at the end of the link.

Gus-- Thanks for the link.

Interesting.  Using Internet Explorer 6.0 SP2 it doesn't seem to matter if the period is there or not.  Works fine either way.
