I have a Horizon Box awning (made by A&E systems)on my '91 26.5' RB. While cranking the awning back, I think I over-tightened it and the crank doesn't come to a tightened state (It just continues to turn). Now I'm afraid that if I open it back up, I may not be able to re-close. Has anyone had a similar experience with that kind of awning? Is there an awning repair place or person that you have used in the Los Angeles or surrounding area? I called a repair place that was on the internet and they acted like, if it was more than five years old they just threw them away and replaced the whole enchilada (for about $1000). That seems like an awful waste to me but it was explained that that they only make parts for about five years for each model. Has anyone else had the same experience? Thanks in advance.
Dale from Downey.

Dale, if yours is like others I've seen, the crank's hooked end goes into a plastic loop. That loop is on the end of a cranking axle, held in place by a pin that goes through the plastic piece and the axle. The plastic piece can easily split, which could lead to the problem you describe--or the pin can fail.
I've done a pin replacement on a friend's awning, but it's a major pain due to the tight clearances and lack of working room up there. Still, it's worth a try. If you get up on your ladder and take a close look at the thing, I'll bet you'll find that's what has happened.

Andy, That sounds like the solution. Do you know if the "Plastic piece" can be replaced? I'm sure the pin can be? Are there any parts places in the area that anyone has used? I'll do as you suggest and get up on a ladder and check it out. Thanks.
Dale.

The A&E brand is owned by Dometic; you might contact them and see what they can suggest a parts source.

I haven't done that myself, but you can certainly get it off, so you just need a replacement part. The awning is made by Fiamma (despite the A&E/Dometic branding), so your best bet is probably to contact them.

Just a few days ago I was on their website and found a walkthrough for replacing the part you are mentioning. I was researching an awful screeching noise that my awning is doing when I unfurl it so I didn't pay much attention to the walkthrough. It may have been a pdf file that you can download.

Edward, When you say "their" web-site, Who are you referring to? Do you mean Fiamma? Thanks, Dale.

I had a very similar problem on an older unit where the part was cast zinc rather than plastic. RV parts stores and the awning manufacturer all were of no help so I spent an hour or two in the shop and made one from aluminum rod.  Many of these small parts are very simple to reverse engineer and rather simple to make with minimum tools.
The pat answer today seem to be replace a 1000.00 dollar assembly rather than supply a 3.00 dollar part..

Good luck Garry

Andy, As it turns out, my awning was not made by Fiamma. It was an A&E systems product. I found the part on the internet (Gear Assembly) from a supplier in Texas ($100). The installation was easy , I just had to drill out a couple of rivets, and now I'm good to go. Thanks for all your help.
