Colorado for Chris H & Victor {others?} - Where to camp around Denv
Yahoo Message Number: 57125
Hey guys, I was planning a leisurely drive out to the mountains next weekend with a stop somewhere out on the plains. However, the long range forecast is for more hot weather and I've had it with hot weather so I think I would like to get at least into the foothills by Saturday evening {about 490 miles from my house to Golden, CO}.

Doth thou haveth a recommendation for an overnight stop {No parking lots - I would be fine with that but my bride is a bit more particular} before heading into the heart of the mountains?

Thanks,

Dave

Dave,
I put a few recommendations in the database section.  But where is your final destination?  There is a place not too far from Golden (Golden Gate Canyon SP), but they are probably booked, but it's worth a try.
It's probably the nicest place close to Denver.  Also, what direction are you coming from?  Some of my favorite places are closer to Ft.
Collins and the best part, they don't take reservations and almost always have spots available.
There are a number of choices, but to find the best fit, we need more info.

Hey Victor, thanks for responding. We are coming from Lincoln, NE, teeth a-chatterin' all the way down that lovely interstate {not!}.
Our itinerary now is Sunday night to Wednesday morning at Heaton Bay on Lake Dillon {site #18 - the best one IMHO!!} and then back to Golden Gate State Park for Wed and Thurs night for some serous hiking adventures. Friday morning into Boulder since we've never been there {any good parks to stash Ruby while we bike around Boulder?!}.

Anyway, I have no real itinerary before arriving at Heaton Bay on Sunday afternoon so Ft Collins, Boulder or the Denver area are all viable entry points to God's country. I really like Ft Collins so if there is a nice place up there, I could see us heading that way before diving back down to I-76.

Thanks again,

Dave

Dave,

This is a very nice park right on your way, but pricey; however, after a 500 mile day, Christine just might deserve something this fancy.  I am not familiar with any others; good, safe places in the foothills are scarce.  We actually were booked to stay here for 6 weeks last early summer while we were between homes but wound up at a Residence Inn near our son's house.
If you get any other suggestions, I would consider checking it out for you if it's not too far away.

Victor has deserted lovely CO for lovely MN.  He just moved there recently.

Hi Dave,
There's a mall in Boulder between 28th and 30th streets just south of Pearl Street where you could day park.  It 'was' called the Crossroads Mall and is undergoing a major redevelopment at this time.

There's one department store, Foley's, that is open during the reconstruction.  It has a good parking lot off 30th street which always seems to be empty unless some organization is holding an event there.  It's centrally located and would be a good place to bike around town from ...

Wayne, do you really think the police in The People's Republic of Boulder :-) would allow an RV to park overnight at Crossroads?

Won't be there overnight Chris, just looking for a day camp to explore for a few hours a week from Friday. The notorious nature of the Boulder Constabulary reaches far and wide. I would not even consider trying to boondock in that city. :-)

Well, that's an entirely intriguing thought Chris!  However, I did interpret Dave's question to be asking for a day camp location.  And that parking lot would be fine.
On the other hand, I jog across town from the YMCA on 28th St over to a Boulder City park across from the Mt. Sanitas trailhead on Mapleton Ave. Over the years I've seen motor homes parked on various city streets; in one case, a Toyota chassis Class C has been in the same general location for a while.  Once in a while I'll see one hooked up via an extension cord.  I also have talked to a person who boondocks in town which by my observations has been for several years now.  I won't say more as I don't want to even take the chance of calling attention to him in public… :-)

However in a conversation with this person, he told me that it's entirely legal to park an RV on city streets in the same location for up to 3 days.  I think it's all about picking the right location.
Of course parking and boondocking are two entirely different things.

Being a reader of Tioga George's blog, I seem to find myself almost unconsciously evaluating any area I'm in for potential boondocking spots.  I thought that when I retire, I'll make a project out of parking and boondocking on all the city streets and then write "The Boondocker's Guide to Boulder".  I would plan to include special emphasis on locations that are already level so ramps or levelers wouldn't be needed.   Maybe the city would pay me not to publish it!

Wayne,

That's blackmail.
The City of Boulder through the Boulder police would probably be more likely to confiscate your LD (obvious drug-running vehicle), shoot your dog (mad dog), and lock you up and throw away the key (habitual criminal)!!!

Good luck with your publishing efforts.
