Comprehensive RV Book?
Yahoo Message Number: 57021
Hi--

Can anyone give us suggestions re: a good up-to-date book about RV-ing?  We are new owners and have a lot of questions, such as the pros and cons of different kinds of leveling systems, from cheap to expensive.  We have read a lot of the posts for the last month or so, and have done some archive searches, but there are a lot of messages to search through!  A good basic book would be helpful.  Thanks. twodrifters

Here are four "handbook" choices (just suggestions, not recommendations):
The RVer's Bible: Everything You Need to Know About Choosing, Using, & Enjoying Your RV  (Kim Baker)

The Rv Handbook: Essential How-To Guide for the Rv Owner  (Bill Estes)

The Complete Idiot's Guide to RVing (Brent Peterson)

Woodall's RV Owner's Handbook  (Woodall Publishing)
The Woodall's has been "revised" and has a publicztion date of June, 2005, but the others are 3-4 years old (or more).  Their age doesn't necessarily make them poor choices, though, and any of the handbooks would offer some good information for beginners.  There's no single source of "all the answers", but one or more of these handbooks might help you define some of the questions!  These are available from Amazon or from any number of other online sources.

You'd have to find a book that coincides w/ your idea of RVing.
Example: Levelers.  Many people think they are the best investment they've made in additions to their LD.  I think they would be a total waste of $$ at half the price.  When I ever found it necessary to be more level than I could find by moving the LD a few inches this way or that, it's taken me less than 10 min to achieve level status.  (W/ the exception of one caravan where the people w/ levelers were putting very large blocks under their feet.)   Doing a cost analysis, I feel that saving several thousand $$ in exchange for a few min work, is a heck of a deal for me.
Others do not see it the same way.  Both points of view are valid, DH wants levelers anyway.
Or: Hookups v. Boondocking.  I figure I paid all that $$ for a motorhome (& then added 4 batteries & 250W of solar panels) so that I I could park anywhere anytime & not pay for the privilege.  To pay up to $50/night to park w/ hookups just does not make sense to me!  Others find that a park w/ hookups (& other amenities) is essential.  Again, both points of view are valid.
In buying a book, you need to look at your viewpoint & buy a book that was written from that same point of view.

In my experience, new RVers don't necessarily *have* a "point of view"; most try to gather as much information as they can from all the resources available before making decisions.  From their request, I gathered that "Twodrifters" are trying to find a single printed resource that provides enough basic, general "RV stuff" information to provide them with a broad exposure to (some of) what's out there.

Thanks to all of you for the info re: RV books.  I guess we definitely qualify as new RVers because we didn't even know we lacked a viewpoint.  =)
