Slow leaks? August 02, 2005, 04:43:05 pm Yahoo Message Number: 56379QuoteGoodyear truck tire shop manager tells me nails are an unavoidable random road hazard and a higher grade all-steel belted tire will not do anything to avoid nail pickup. Steel belts are not intended to prevent punctures. Their function is to improve the tire contact patch by giving high rigidity to the tread region of the tire carcass, while retaining flexibility in the unbelted radial sidewalls. This is what gives steel-belted radial designs a distinct handling advantage over older designs using fabric belts.A sharp nail-point will simply bend the steel strands aside.Steve

A slow leak on the way down last fall - finally figured out it was a loose stem. On the last week of our trip home this spring, had another slow leak on the other side (both times the inner rears). It was losing only about 3-5 pounds a day, so I'd pump it up each morning amd kept a close watch on it during the day. When I got home, I pulled the tires and found a nail buried in it. Guess it's just a part of the RV life-style! I'm with you regarding the daily pressure checks - takes only a couple of minutes and could prevent a major headache.Ted H. '02 FL NE-12 From: "bobsiegely" Has anyone picked up a lot of nails ands screws in their rear LD tires? We've picked up four in 15 months, each resulting in a tire repair. We got hit all across the US. I caught all of them as slow leaks during routine pressure checking before any serious problems occurred.[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
