Surfboard Carrier Suggestions Needed
Yahoo Message Number: 56223
We are waiting for delivery of our 30 IB in the Fall and can't wait to plan our first surf trip. We coud use some suggestions for where to store/carry a 9ft longboard. I do NOT want my hubby to climb the ladder with this heavy board to store on the roof and it does not fit in the rear storage comparments.

We would like to fashion some kind of carrier or rack on the rear - any suggestions?

Long things can be gently leaned up against the MH, then, depending on length and weight, one can reach down and pull them up using either a sling arrangement or a second person boosting the object up. For objects too heavy for such manual lifting, at least one LD owner has installed booms and winches to extend out over the side.

HI Murf-
My husband is a surfer, too, and would also have trouble climbing on the roof (Rheumatoid Arthritis). Although we haven't done this yet, we have seen motorhome owners with surf racks attached to the side of the vehicle (the driver's side). It looks like it works quite well, the racks are padded, but we don't know if you can order then or if they have to be custom-made. We would like to find out more, too! Regards, Denise Shook (Leucadia, CA)

I have seen a few RVs with rear racks that hold several boards, each standing straight up, edges facing forward and rearward. Each board slides into its own slot. The bars holding the boards are covers with foam rubber, to protect the gel-coat.
I have also seen racks that store the boards in a horizontal plane but this would limit you to short boards and exclude any long boards over 8'.
The racks are either bolted to the rear bumper or use the trailer hitch receiver as a mounting point.
Most racks are home built but a welding or trailer hitch shop should be able to build, if you can supply the plans.
There might be commercially made models for all I know. Google it.

I have also seen racks that store the boards in a horizontal plane, across the rear of the MH, but this would limit you to short boards, excluding anything longer than 8'.
The roof is also available for storage. I have made good us of it with my kayaks racks. You could use the crossbars for storage.

If you live near surfing/camping beaches, take a drive through the campgrounds and you might just find an example.

See you at the beach.
