Jack,
I certainly hope you survive a whole lot longer than that! :^)  Best wishes for a good outcome on those tests.

Oh, yeah! You can bet on my being there--that's one event I would not miss!
Thanks, Len, and everyone else, for your good wishes. I'm looking forward to the adventure of a lifetime. And in case anybody's wondering--yes, I will still manage this group from the road. Gotta call up Dustyfoot and order that Direcway dish... ;-)

I'm very happy to hear you will still be our leader and I'm sure the others in this group fill the same way.
On your way across the country stop off in San Antonio and you can help me set up some computer stuff in my LD.  I'm somewhat technically challenged.
See you already have some work lined up and you haven't even started yet.

Andy, I have a feeling that at the GC there could be a number of satellite Internet systems.  Are you planning on running a wireless access point?  If we get satellite Internet, I plan on going wireless and I expect most folks will.  We should find a way to coordinate use from those willing to provide access.  Maybe defining SSIDs and WAP keywords.  What do you think?

Good idea Art,
We will be there too and I usually leave my WAP, SSID is TortugaNet, open to anyone.  It should be fairly simple to look at nearby networks and move channels around if there is interference.  I'm normally on Channel 10 as it is not a default.
For those who don't want to leave their connection open, you can name your SSID your license plate number so that folks can come and ask for a password.  Probably a good way to meet people!

Jonna, aren't you afraid of having someone steal your personal information? I've heard of people driving around with the WiFi *sniffers* looking for an open connection so they can get personal information.

Yes, though I haven't decided whether to open it to the public or not. With some of the large files I receive from clients, I'll need all the bandwidth I can get!

I don't leave my computer open, to the internet or to my local net.  I use a firewall on both laptops, no filesharing over the local net.
Thus, my personal information which is stored on my harddrive is not open to the outside world.  It is as easy or difficult to break into a computer that is firewalled from anywhere on the internet as from a car parked outside the RV.  With enough smarts, time and effort probably any computer could be hacked into. It's like that old saying, you don't have to be faster than the bear, just faster than the other guy running.  If your box is a PITA to get into, there will be plenty others that are wide open.

I've also gone out with a wardriving program and checked how far my wap broadcasts.  It doesn't go farther than I can see for sure and depending on what's

Andy,

You may need to get a 'business' level of service, check the FAP carefully if you receive a lot of large files.  I think mine is somewhere around 160 MG with

Sorry about falling into the acronyms!

When I mentioned wireless, I was referring to Wireless Local Area Network, also know as WLAN or WiFi or 802.11b/g.  For RVs with satellite internet, it's real handy to set up a wireless network in and around the RV so you can use your laptops without having wires.
The "base station" part of this is called a "Wireless Access Point" or WAP.  Each wireless network can have a "name" called the "Service Set IDentifier" or SSID.  SSIDs are used to distinquish between multiple wireless LANs in the same physical area.  To provide privacy and security, wireless LANs use something called "Wireless Encryption Protocol" or WEP.  If encryption is turned on for a WLAN, everyone needs to know the password to access it.

Hope this helps, Art

SSID is "service set identifier." It's a string of up to 32 characters that act as the name of your wireless network. The wireless access point broadcasts its SSID so anyone trying to make a wireless connection will see it.  It's easy to set the SSID in your wireless access point. You might use "Blue Lazy Daze Site 132," for example, if you want to help people find you.

WEP is "Wired Equivalent Privacy," a protocol that provides secure communications between your computer and the wireless access point.
Each data packet is encrypted using a WEP keyword known to your computer and to the wireless access point.
(As an aside: WEP has some well documented flaws, so many people are replacing WEP with the more secure WPA, "wifi protected access" protocol.   A lot of laptops let you choose to use WEP or WPA, depending on what the wireless access point is using.  For a network set up for a few days before you move on, WEP is secure enough.)
All the devices that want to share a wireless local area network must share the same SSID, and your computer needs to know the WEP keyword.
That's why Art suggested coordinating the SSID and WEP at the get-together.

Thanks for the warning Jonna! I had already checked with Direcway on that. Their FAP limit for personal accounts is 169 MB within one to four hours. Fortunately, the files I get are not *that* big--more like one to five megs in a day, tops. That's way too big for a low- speed cell phone connection, but nowhere near triggering a FAP slowdown on Direcway's service.

Fascinating?  I found it depressing as hell.  Guess I better start digging!  Maybe it depends where on the scale you fall.

Hi Pat Not to worry, I have heard it said that when your born the date of your death is pre recorded. and you cannot experience your own death. So throw down the shovel and live it up.
