OK, this isn't appropriate for the list, but I'll just do it anyway. A bunch of you have known that my son Mike, has been on active duty in Iraq for the past year. Many of you have helped bring him home to his family, safe and healthy, with your thoughts and prayers.

He returned safely to his home base in Fort Lewis, Washington, Saturday. Thank all of you who knew, gave me support and simply commiserated with me. And thanks the rest of  you who didn't, but are tolerant enough to let me share my joy on this list.

What's more appropriate than to share your joy with your LD *family?*  Earl and I share your joy...it's so wonderful to hear that he's back safe and sound!

Outstanding!  That is wonderful news, Sarah, and we understand your joy and relief.  We've been in the same situation, and have the grey hairs to prove it.  Please pass along our appreciation to your son for his service.

Congratulations to you and to your son as well. If you would, please tell him that the older veterans out here appreciate the sacrifice he had made for us and for his country. And let us pray that he has paid his dues in full.

Dear Sarah and Pete,
You shared the best possible news with those of us who love you - and that is everyone on this forum, at the very least.  There was hardly a day that went by when I didn't think about him in harm's way and how grateful I am about his safe return.  I have never met Mike, but please give him a hug from the Jirges.  Jag joins me in welcoming Mike home.

Fondly,

Roz

Sarah,
Thanks for sharing your joy.  We didn't know he was in Iraq but your post reminded me of when my brother came home from Vietnam in the late 60's and it brought back good memories and some wet eyes.  My mother said that she had prayed every night for him while he was over there.

Thank you for sharing this, Sarah.  We all know people who haven't returned from some hazardous assignment or another, and good news is always welcome. Please give Mike our thanks.

Yes, Sarah, your son was all this time in my thoughts.
I was really sad (and am) seeing all those young, strong, youngsters like we were once, a long time ago, suffering. Young as we were, full of hope and joy to live, making plans, dreaming with the future, as we were..... dying, being hurt, maimed.

Specially after seeing a series of photos that somebody put the web address here in the group before christmas, I looked to all those faces, so young...some of them sleeping, peacefully like children...It was a deeply emotional moment for me.

In another way, I'm living also the experience that we are not invulnerable, and that life is a marvelous gift.

And your son, the only youngster there in Iraq whose mother I have the pleasure to "know", became a symbol for me. He was everyday in my thoughts, I worried each time I read the terrible everyday news.
You'll never know how I was (and am) happy with the news of his safe return.

From your friend in Brasil,

Eudoro

With all the dour news that comes across our computer screen, what a joyful bit of news!
Because of and through you, we feel as though he's partly our son, too - (extended family stuff!) at least we've worried and prayed and hoped ever since you mentioned where Mike was .... Thank God he is home.  We know it will be a great celebration for all of you!  Welcome home, Mike!  Congratulations, Sarah!!!  Cheers! Bienvenido, Mike from sunny San Felipe!

Oh Sarah!  What wonderful news!  We think of Mike often and I thought he was getting near the end of his tour. I didn't want to ask as it almost felt like it would be tempting fate to talk about his coming home too much before it happened. This is fantastic!  I know how hard it has been for you and how brave you have been, I'll bet Saturday night was the best night's sleep you've gotten in a year.  A huge virtual hug for you from Mimi and I and a heartfelt 'Thank You' to Mike.
A side note, we watched the Super Bowl here on another RV'ers Canadian satellite connection and of course, the commercials were different.
So today, Mimi pulled up the US Superbowl commercials on AOL and we watched a lot of them.  There is one by Budweiser called 'Thank You' that shows a busy airport and a few soldiers in desert fatigues start walking across it.  As they pass, everyone in the airport stops, stands up and starts to clap.  It brought tears to my eyes, and, of course, my mind went to Mike.  I'm so glad that he was home already and safe.
