RV Resort in or around Benson, AZ
Yahoo Message Number: 50349
We're going south to the Benson, Tombstone, Bisbee area and are looking for a nice full-hookup camp to call home base for a few days.  CtoC lists Valley Vista RV Resort and Pato Blanco Lakes Senior RV Park. We're leaning toward Valley Vista.  Any comments on these two or any other suggestions?

Thanks,

Alice & Ed Mertz

We stayed several days at the Kartchner Caverns State Park, south of Benson.  Very nice, scenic, roomy, friendly staff and hosts.  No sewer, but dump station.

I can't speak on either of your proposals.  But we've seen a couple places around there:

In Benson we stayed at Butterfield; it is a high-service-style camp with hookups fairly near town.  But nothing special.  (We did not notice any special appeal to the town of Benson).
Bisbee appealed more to us - it's a stylish historic town.  Queen Mine camp is right in the town center, and we liked it a lot.
Tombstone is pretty special!  Wells Fargo camp is right in town with walking to everywhere.  Tombstone felt right for me, because I used to play cowboys and I felt like a kid again  ;-)

Karcher Caverns are also nice;  we had water & elecric only

Hi Alice & Ed, The first thing you need to do is to invest in the Passport America 50 percent off discount camping club. It is even cheaper if you are a member of Camping World's President Club or the Escapees Club. If my memory serves me correctly, it is $49 for normal membership for one year and $39 for one year if you belong to any on the clubs above. Just by using it a couple of times, pays for your membership.  I used Passport America this past Christmas on a cross-country trip. The average price I paid per night was $15.  The lowest was $13 at the Oak 'N Pines RV park in Lake City Florida.
Great park with FREE Wi-Fi.  There were no Passport America parks in Atlanta, GA so I wound up paying $35/day plus tax.
Now the best resort in the Benson area, IMO, is Cochise Terrace RV Resort, which is on Arizona highway 90 South.  There is a nice gasoline station/truck stop right on I-10/hwy 90.  Cochise Terrace sits high up on the hill overlooking the San Pedro valley and the town of Benson. Paved interior streets, gravel pads. Beautiful clubhouse and pool.
Also, Cochise Terrace is a few miles from Kartchner Caverns on highway 90.  This same highway, 90 goes down to the best kept jewel of retirement towns, Sierra Vista.  Housing and land are still cheap. Sierra Vista also has a big Army base, so if you are active or retired military you got it made in terms of services. Lots of on base golf. They might even have military camping facilities. Check your SMART book.
Anyway, I recommend the following RV parks in the area. I have stayed at the first three.

Cochise Terrace RV Resort, 1-800-495-9005, Benson Benson I-10 RV Park,1-800-599-0081, Benson KOA, 1-800-koa-6823, Benson Pato Blanco Lakes RV Park, 1-800-229-9368, Benson Pueblo Del Sol RV Resort, 1-888-551-1423, Sierra Vista Tombstone Territories RV Park, 1-877-316-6714, Hauchuca City St David RV Resort, 1-520-720-4140, St David

The weather is great this time of year all the way up to April.
Enjoy,

Escapees no longer offers the discount for Passport America (but they do for Happy Campers Club, which is similar to PA).  I just recently heard that you can no longer get a Passport America discount through Camping World, either, but don't know this from personal experience, so don't know how true it is (guess PA is getting too big and popular to offer discounts through third-party organizations).
