For the money, it would be hard to beat the original Trojan T-105 batteries. If freezing is a concern, simply making sure the batteries are fully charged, and then disconnected before winter storage, should provide adequate protection. Batteries will self- discharge over time, but this process is slowed when cold.

From the Trojan website:

"–Can batteries freeze? In a partially discharged state, the electrolyte in a lead acid battery may freeze. At a 40% state of charge, electrolyte will freeze if the temperature reaches approximately 16.0oF. The freezing temperature of the electrolyte in a fully charged battery is - 92.0oF."

Note that, in any event, you should not be storing batteries in a 40% state of charge.

Gene:

AGM batts are more expensive, but they are more temperature- tolerant, do not need any maintenance besides a simple wipe out with a rag in the contacts now and then.

It's the type of battery US Airforce use in some of their planes.
