HELP! Ruby sprang a leak!
Yahoo Message Number: 49689
snowstorms and -18 two nights in a row last Friday and Saturday - 52 degrees today - gotta love Nebraska.

Here's the problem, haven't visited Ruby for a few days but went inside her and looked around today and lo and behold there is a puddle of water on the floor!! Closer inspection shows water running down the woodwork from under the fridge. I go outside and open the fridge area and it is FULL of snow! Although that side of the coach is facing south, the winds must have whipped up the snow from around and below then up through the vents - it was an incredibly light, cold snow.

Well, I have cleared that out, dried everything in sight and all seems okay now. There is no damp wood anywhere to be seen inside area compartments or out.
My question, is this something I need to have technician look at?!?! Ruby sits at a slight angle from south to north so that water in the outer compartment would run toward the inside. Perhaps I should put her on blocks to be level.

Thanks for your thoughts.

The same weather condition could happen again tomorrow or next week so you need to either tilt it, so water drains from the refrigerator compartment or cover the roof vent to prevent snow from entering in the first place.
I would suggest running an electric heater inside your rig for a few days to eliminate any moisture that escaped your efforts to remove.
It's cheap insurance.

Hi Dave, I haven't had the same problem, but I think I may have a solution for you. You mention the snow came in through the vents, are you referring to the ventilated opening on the side of your rig, or from the roof area?

When I winterize my rig, I put aluminum foil inside the refer openings on the inside of that removable pannel. Do the same thing with the water heater area too. I use duct tape to cover over the furnace exhaust area. I seem to remember reading about doing this in a RV maintenance guide. I had always assumed it was to keep insects & mice from possible entry ways, but I guess it keeps snow and rain from entering too. If the snow blew in down the roof top exhaust for the fridge, perhaps a cover on that would be in order too. We cover our rig for the winter, so I haven't experienced these problems.

I don't think your rig needs attention from a repair shop. While there is a lot of sealant in the exterior of the refer area, I don't think it was meant to be water proof to the point of preventing melting snow from finding its way to the interior.

We've had much more snow than usual too. Makes you start to think about living in a warmer climate, but then I read Raleigh NC was paralyzed on Thursday by one inch of snow! No wonder the South lost the war! ;-)

GOOD TUFF - I'll do that this weekend - from the looks of it, my guess is it blew in through the vents on the side of the coach due to an ultra light snow and swirling winds.

ok smart guy....I am in Raleigh, NC.  Grew up in Illinois (home of Abe Lincoln and General Grant).  Best place in the coutnry to live according to Forbes Magazine.  However, the snow the other afternoon fell around 1:30 PM, the outside temp was in the high 20s.  The cars sorta melted the snow flakes but then they immediately turned to ice.  The roads turned to glass.  The kids couldn't get home from school. My wife works with a lady who left work at 3:00PM and didn't get home until 1:30AM on what is normally a 30 minute drive.  Having said all of that...the South is where all the "smart" yanks move!

Jeff, I've heard it said that everything is a little "slower paced" in the South, but a dumb Yankee could have WALKED home in less time than that! ;-)
Did you hear the one about the guy near Raleigh that didn't winterize his LD? He was worried he ruined his plumbing, so he went out and bought another LD, all within 12 months?

Steve K. (wondering how many Raleighites starved because is snowed again?)

Thanks for the heads up on refer compartment snow!  While shoveling I checked my SOB and sure enough, snow in the refer compartment.
Brushed it out and covered the vents with plastic sheeting.
