Daily mileage ranged from 205 (max) down to 35!  YMMV.  Stop and smell the flowers.

Ted & Liz, we'd travel with you any day!  That's exactly the way we like to travel, too -- and we've even gone less than 35 miles in a single day!

Steve, Andy and others,

Thanks for your concern and driving tips.  I must say I didn't expect the response, but I guess I shouldn't be surprised.
First off, it's not as bad as it sounds.  It's not like I travel for days at a schedule like that.  I think I have done maybe 2 days in row like that at the most.  Most of my long trips are to MN and CA.
So about 900 to 1000 miles.  To cover that distance in 2 days in not unheard of.

The reason I can drive for so long is because of all the breaks I take.  Like what Andy had suggested, I drink a lot and eat a lot during my travels.  By the way, I don't drink coffee or coke, ever.
My drink of choice is water.  When I travel alone, I keep a bottle of water and snacks within reach.  I will either run out of water or have to relieve myself before too long.  I travel at speeds no greater than 65 mph, normally between 60 and 65.  If for some reason, I can't go as long as I wanted, I will pull over.  On a few occasions, I've stopped for the day when I was about an hour away from my destination.  I know my limits.

In my original post I said I stop at half a tank and when I need to fill up.  Those are mandatory stops for me.  What I left out was the unplanned stops, as noted above.

I am, relatively, young and in good health and fairly active.  Of course that does not preclude me from getting fatigued, but it's not like I am overweight, inactive and 80 years old.  I enjoy driving, to my wife's dismay, and love seeing new things.  I have always driven for long periods from early on in my driving history.  I get very restless while traveling, which is why I tend to get an early start.

When I travel with the family, it's much different, because my wife does not like to be on the road for too long, we stop sooner, but take fewer breaks.  So we cover more miles per hour.  We stop sooner also so we can enjoy a campground and I can BB-Q something for dinner.  When I travel alone, I just stop at rest areas to sleep.
That being said, I like to make extra stops to see things I think the kids will enjoy.  But the wife is more concerned with the destination than the trip.  So, I can't stop at every place I want to.
The day I retire, I will cherish being able to travel at a leisurely 200 miles a day and stopping at every fishing whole I run across.
I hope that has put your minds at ease and that I am not a time bomb waiting to explode.

Thanks again for your concern,

-Victor (who is far from retirement)

Ah, what's the rush, bumper?    On the 35-mile day, we happened across a military campground (Onslow Beach at Camp Lejeune, SC) we had been trying to find in previous trips south; we stopped to check it out, and it was so nice we decided to stay.

35 miles!! Golly gee! Are you running it with just the starter motor? Try filling the gas tank and hammerin' that puppy down the highway. (g)

Yes, being retired and/or a fulltimer makes a difference in one's driving style! You have the luxury of taking your time, because you don't have to make the most of two weeks of vacation time.

It is about 35 miles between two SoCal Thousand Trails Preserves.  It took us three days to make the trip!

As is so frequently the case, we stopped to check out what a potential boondock spot looked like, and found that it took the rest of that day to check it out; all of the next day and night to be absolutely certain that the night sky was perfect; and then we trundled on in on the third day, after a thorough inspection of the sunrise!

Is that any kind of a record?

No, no! I was only funnin' (g). If you want to pull forward a few feet to hide the meter maid's chalk mark - - that's okay with me - - really!

In fact, I think we should have an official "Shortest Day Contest", as having a longest day contest wouldn't be promoting safety at all.
Who's moved the shortest distance in a single day? (Meter maid moving doesn't count, nor does changing camp sites in the same RV park :c)

When I toted up my miles at the end of the year, I found one day where I drove a whopping 18 miles!!  I can just see the headlines now: "Rolling Home Gathers Moss."

We weren't talking about speed, but for the record: stupid mistakes (including those made by smart people) can happen at any speed, but mistakes made at high speed are a lot more likely to kill you.

Perhaps I should have said "High" speed does not kill but the sudden stop upon impact by smart and/or dumb people is more likely to have that affect.

Speed kills. Period. At high speeds it is difficult/impossible to control, maneuver or brake the vehicle.

To deny that is ... well, not logical.  ;-)

Forgive this question, I just joined this group. When replying to a post, are we to leave everything previously written about the subject like bobsiegely does, or delete most of the message like most other people do? I thought in my membership welcome, it was stated that we are to delete most, but sometimes I don't understand so good. Thank you.

"When replying to a post, are we to leave everything previously written about the subject like bobsiegely does, or delete most of the message like most other people do? I thought in my membership welcome, it was stated that we are to delete most..."

You're right!
Thanks for bringing this up. Matter of fact, I was getting ready to post a reminder on the subject. Because many of us have low-bandwidth connections while traveling--as low as 14.4 kbps with a cell phone or 4 kbps with PocketMail--it's very desirable to minimize unnecessary repetition. When somebody posts a 40-line message, that's fine...but when somebody else replies with "Me too!" followed by the entire text of the original message, that makes life hard on those of us with slow connections.
I know that many email programs (and Yahoo itself) default to copying the entire text of the replied-to message, so it's easy to fall into this habit...but it would be *greatly* appreciated if everyone would take the two seconds needed to select that default text and delete it. (PCs: control-A, then delete; Macs: command-A, then delete.)
Now it's fine, and indeed very helpful, to copy and paste into your reply a selected phrase or a sentence from the previous message, showing what you're replying to. You'll notice that I do this in almost every message I write. But please, please, don't let your software blindly duplicate whole slabs of text that we've already read once (sometimes more than once)! Just a little care in this regard will help you win friends and influence people. :-)

OK, Lorna,
You made me do it - get our mileage log out and take a look through it.  And....I came up with a 12-mile day!  That was in Rhode Island last summer, and we all know big RI is!  Hard to imagine taking two or more days to drive across Little Rhody, but it did.  It's a great life, ain't it?

Cheers, Ted
