Monthly costs of FTiming it

Hello

I was just wondering if anyone ever figured out what it takes-on average- to FT it either cruising or hunkering down somewhere (insurance, food, gas, and any other incidentals) per month.

any help would be appreciated.

Thanks a bunch

Angel

Angel,

Take a look at this website.
 http://vagabonders-supreme.net/

The guy that does it has tons of info about fulltiming on there, including his itemized monthly budget. It's an interesting, well- done site that is updated daily.

Also check out Open Roads Forum if you haven't already.
Type "fulltiming costs" into their search and you will find alot of info there.

Hi all,

I'm  curious..does it bother anyone that he asks for cash donations through his site?

Apparently that's how he affords fulltiming.

From time to time he talks happily about what he's purchased or received...like a new backup camera for his rig.

Just wondering...

Tina,

It did strike me as a little odd when I saw it. I doubt that he takes in enough in donations to support himself, but who knows?

RE:  Vagabonders Supreme

I have been following George's adventures almost from the moment he set out.  He's just a guy, who had a nasty brush with cancer, in an RV, doing the best he can with his life.  As far as it seems to appear, he isn't scamming anyone, but making do with what he has, or can earn by posting his adventures.

I believe his children set him up originally with the DataStorm package, and, as is easy to see, this contact with the "outside world" is what keeps his spirits up.  Much of his writing is done in "fantasy" character names, but he has some serious pages, too, that tell all about his trials and tribulations, and how he came to be in an RV.  If you haven't had the opportunity to visit these pages, you might find them informative.

I don't see where asking for donations in the quiet way he does is any different from a street musician or mime with a hat on the ground for donations.  A service is performed, and if you care to contribute a little something to the person who has given you some "value added" for your life, then there is a mechanism to do so.  If you feel that you wish to just read his journals for free, that is cool, too.  There is certainly no pressure.

He has recently started using the Google AdSense method of acquiring a bit of income.  Google apparently thinks highly enough of his informative site that they put ads on it.  I don't know the mechanism by which George gets funds from this, but he talks briefly about it at his site.

I wouldn't want to BE George, nor do I have any desire to follow in his footsteps, but I do read his site every day just to keep track of how he is doing.  He certainly is doing a lot more traveling than I am!  AND . . . he's a whole lot warmer these days! ;->

Asking for donations isn't how I would choose to make a living, but that's just a personal decision. I don't see anything wrong with it.
Let's remember that Art Berggreen asks for donations to the LD Group Archives site (http://www.lazydazers.org/Yahoo/msg_display.php>) to defray the cost of operating that very useful service, and I haven't heard anybody complain about that. (In fact, I donated, and I encourage anybody else who uses the archive regularly to do so.)
If somebody thinks the "Tioga and George" site provides enough value to justify donating money to him, fine. I don't, but that's just me.

Every used to post a $$ amount every once in a while.
I believe once it was around $600! Hasn't done that in a long while though.

That's true! And I certainly wish him well on his journey. A lot of people seem to enjoy his posts immensely.

I met up with George in San Diego in Dec.  Nice guy, really upbeat.
Told me you need $1500 a month be out there.

The monthly cost of fulltiming is so variable, there is no one answer that will fit everyone.
Food costs will probably be about the same (groceries may be a bit more because you won't be able to buy in bulk anymore, but if you currently enjoy eating out a lot, that's unlikely to change just because you are fulltimers).
You can control your gas expenditures by staying in one place for longer periods of time...and using a toad that gets much better gas mileage than the LD does.
By the same token, you can control your per night parking expenses by either staying for a month or more in an RV park, or do more dry camping/boondocking (our per-night average is around $8).
Insurance is probably going to be more -- the typical fulltimers insurance policy costs more than an equivalent homeowner's policy.
This question comes up a lot on RV forums.  You might want to check places like the Open Road Forum ( http://www.rv.net/forum/index.cfm ) and the Escapees Discussion Forum ( http://escapees.infopop.cc/6/ubb.x ) for more information on this subject.

Wow. This is really an interesting blog. And I love the fact that he adds the GPS coordinates where he stays. And there's an article on tire pressure monitors - haven't read it yet, but will go back later and take a look. This really makes staying home harder!
