Where do you put the trash can in a 26.5RB?
Yahoo Message Number: 48672
We just brought home our beautiful 26.5RB and we love it.  The only thing is I am having a hard time figuring out where to put the one trash can we have in the unit.  Since the pantry is under the sink, that is not the ideal place for it although that is where I usually have one. I wanted to put some drawers beside the bathroom sink so our cosmetics would be handy but I can't because that is where the trash can is right now.  Anyone have some suggestions for reorganization?

Thanks,

Susieann

Suzieann,

We have a RB also and use plastic grocery bags for trash. The handiest place we found was to hang in off of the toilet paper holder on the side of the bathroom sink. Much easier to use than a trash can.

Hi Susieann, I hang a double plastic grocery bag on the shower head.
But I'm sure you'll get better sugestions than this one! Cheers, SC

Susieanne, congratulations -- what a wonderful way to start the New Year, and you will just love your floorplan.  (Is my bias showing?!)
My kitchen trash can migrates and wanders.  It's a small rectangular plastic "can" purchased at Camping World that originally had a swinging top, long since gone to trash can heaven.  (I finally figured out why attempted rim shots just seemed to boomerang back to me!) A grocery store plastic bag is a perfect fit.  Mostly it stays under the dinette, sometimes inside the step well by the side door, sometimes in the walkway -- depends on where I'm sitting and if there's company.
(However, I also have a bathroom basket for toilet paper, since I'm one of those who believes nothing goes into the toilet unless it's been eaten first!!)
Calicia Hardin uses two plastic shower curtain rings threaded through each of the hand-holds of a plastic bag, then attaches the bag to the oven door handle.  Works great and very convenient.  (BTW, Calicia also showed me how to use those doohickies for attaching a plastic table cloth to one of those thick cement picnic tables -- a box of them also available at Dollar Stores for ... you guessed it!)
Also, another idea for your cosmetics instead of drawers (also good for hair stuff, sewing gadgets and so on):  get some plastic "pencil boxes" -- little jewel colored, hinged storage boxes you can find at Target, Dollar Store, etc., about 5"x8", and tuck them into the long hidden cubbie above the rear window valence.  All kinds of stuff fits down in there!

Have fun finding places and organizing -- such a fun part of the LD experience.

Susieann,
Congratulations on your new RB! You're going to keep on loving it.  If you want to see a picture of how we deal with the trash in our RB, look in the photo section under Jonna's Tortuga, it's picture number 10 and the hook I use to hang the bag from the stove is in picture number 9.  There are also a couple of pictures of the bathroom trash can we attached to the wall below the TP holder.  Like Lorna, we never put paper in the tank and this can has a flip close lid.  I like using plastic bags for the kitchen trash as we can find a place to dump them easily since they are small, I like to keep the trash small and empty it often.  For small bathroom items, we bought small wire baskets with hooks on the back at a Bed, Bath and Beyond.  They hook over the rail that runs just below the ceiling along the back wall.  They work great for things like toothbrushes and hairbrushes and bug spray - which is what we have in them, you may need other things close at hand.

Enjoy,

Jonna, currently in San Miguel de Allende

I don't know about the other models, but in our '30 TB "throne room", we use a compost pail, with an attached lid, that matches the counter in color, holds a plastic shopping bag, and fits nicely beside the toilet when traveling, and sits on the counter when we're parked.  I found it in the Gardner's Supply catalog:

Or,

We have dogs, so hang recycled plastic shopping bags from one of two plastic over the door-type hooks in the kitchen…one on the lower lip of the cabinet above the sink, one above the range hood.  We just move them to whichever spot works at the moment.  They don't interfere with the cabinet doors.

Aonther possibility to consider: it's very easy to form coathanger wire--nature's all- purpose miracle substance--into a rectangular hoop that will support a recycled plastic grocery bag. Put a little loop on each end so you can mount it to the wall, and voila! Watch for detailed instuctions on the "Wonderful World of Wire" page of my website (whenever I get around to it ;-).

What works for me to dispose of garbage . . . I use a large coffee can lined with recycled plastic bags of appropriate size for wet garbage, utilizing the top to the coffee can to its fullest extent, supplementing with grocery-sized plastic bags for dry garbage.  I leave a small supply of the smaller plastic bags at the bottom of the coffee can, and just leave the "dry garbage" bag wherever it appropriately lands for any given occasion, with a loose knot tied in the top.

As someone mentioned, if there is a handy disposal place within the camping place, I tend to get rid of these small amounts frequently, as smells build up quickly.  The cover on the coffee can is a blessing when disposal is more problematic.

Although I haven't tried it, I always wondered if the Genie system for disposable diapers wouldn't work well for ridding oneself of toilet paper in the bathroom without worry of odors or unwitting spread of bacteria.

Hi Susiann!
My wife and I just drove accross the country after picking up our 26 RB Dec 21. We simply bought a small plastic kitchen trash can (without a top)In WalMart and use the standard white kitchen trash bags. In the day while we are stopped, the trash can goes near the entry door or under the dinette table (depending on whether we are in and out frequently). During travel, we put in in the entry well by the main door. One other tip: we put spare bags in the bottom of the trash can. When we tie up our garbage, we know exactly where a fresh bag is.

We find the best location is between the front driver and passenger seats. That way bag is handy to grap and pitch out the cab window when nobody's looking.

I'm curious...what is the "Genie system?"  Not that we'd use it -- all of our TP goes into the holding tank as we're not at all worried about TP making a problem.  In all of our years of fulltiming, and now half-timing, we've never had a problem with TP in the black tank.
