Andy, when you get around to posting on "Andy's Wonderful World of Wire", would you please consider a solution for storing hats...specifically red hats? ;^)  I know you mentioned getting the idea for your gas cap holder from seeing the idea used for cowboy hats, if I remember correctly.  As a Red Hatter who would like to take one or two of my hats with me in my LD, I could really use a wire holder that wouldn't crush them.  I think Larry (?) posted an idea for storing a hat above the entry door, but the brims on my hats don't work with that solution.  (Think, cowboy hats on steroids, with feathers, bows, and glitz.)

You would think that here in TX I could find a decent hat holder that could screw to the wall of the LD, but noooo.

You need to get some wire coat hangers, a pair of regular pliers and needle nose pliers and start designing your own cowboy hat holder.
Maybe you will come up with something to sell to your fellow Texans.
I would make the prototype out of lightweight wire, something easy to work with. When you think you have a workable design, transfer the shape to the heavier coat hanger wire.

If your hat is as fancy as some I have seen, it should probably be stored

Your memory is good, Sharon! I was inspired by a hat holder in a former presidential aircraft--a pair of wire half-hoops designed to hold LBJ's trademark Stetsons. I scaled the design down to hold my gas cap; you can scale it up again to hold your red hats. See the closeup photo at

I think you guys are missing an invention opportunity here! Just for a moment, envision an LD cruising down the highway with a selection of cowboy hats stored

You mean to tell me you can't find a wire hat holder at a western store in TX.? Even we TN hillbillies have those!

Thanks for the hatholder suggestions, Larry and Andy.  I printed out the photo of the wire holder and will try to duplicate it, in a larger size.  Bumper's suggestion of ladder mounted transparent hat boxes has a lot of flair to it, though!  ;^)

And, to "joeltonjet", yep, the western stores I checked in the Houston and Conroe areas had nothing I could use.  Where in TN would I find one?  I even did a search on the Internet with poor results.
I did turn up a lot of cab ceiling mounted holders for cowboy hats, but they would not work for my needs.

Thanks, all.

Try Harry's Western Ware in San Saba, Texas where they stack it deep and sell it cheap (or like the little chickens say Cheep, Cheep) You can stay in the City park, Very nice or drive on over to Llano and stay in thier City park on the Llano River and make all the Antique shops. And you must try Cooper's Bar-B-Que UUM Good.
See Ya down the road Robert PS: Bumper has to fly with the canopy open when he wears his hat.

Can you tell us a bit more about why not, Sharon? The ones I've turned up (e.g.,  bitnspurtack.com/hatholbrmoun.html>) are made of lariat rope and look simple enough. I guess the main difference between them and the wire type is that the rope holders surround the crown of the hat completely, while the wire holders only go halfway around.
Is that a problem? I'm trying to visualize why these rope ceiling holders would not be suitable, but not having seen your red hats I can't be certain where the difficulty lies.

Thanks, Robert. Sounds like a great place to visit!  We'll check it out next time we head that way.  I'll pass on the B-B-Q, since I'm a vegetarian, but MY Robert will definitely want to try it. :^)
