Made it back from our trek north

After going up to the northern Indiana area for Christmas 2004, I feel like I have a good feel for the Lazy Daze's cold weather capabilities.

Spent 4 days, 3 nights with nights consistently at -5F.
 The only damage was a seal on an outer storage doors. The doors froze and had to be forced open. A door opened and the seal came with the door. Next time, I'll put some kind of lubricant on the door seals.

We wanted to sleep in the LD at night to make sure everything kept warm. We had a 20A extension cord from my parent's house. To keep warm, we ran a 1200W heater, a Heater Buddy, an electric blanket for our bed and the LD furnace.
 We did the usual to seal off the main living area from frigid weather, vent covers, a quilt to block off the cab.
 A case of Dr. Pepper froze behind the passenger seat in our mid-bath and one of the cans burst. Enough cold air must have leaked through.
Next time, we won't keep soft drinks there.
 The holding tanks froze. My plan to dump on arrival in Indiana didn't work out due to arriving 8 hours behind schedule (the temp was 10F instead of the planned 28F), so we just used the tanks as normal. On the way home, I tried to dump in Alabama. The valves opened in Alabama, but nothing came out. Later in Vicksburg Mississippi, the tanks thawed.
 We left on Wednesday afternoon (12/22/04) from Dallas about 1:00 pm up through the western edge of the Ohio Valley Storm. Driving was hell.
Had to drive about 8 hours at an average of 20 miles an hour. I feel for the people in southern Indiana, at least I made it through.

I now have a lot of confidence in the Lazy Daze's cold weather capablility and know what it can and can't do.

Wow, thanks for this cold weather report! We've been talking about taking our LD to Crystal Mtn ski area (near Mt Rainier) and staying overnight so we could ski two consecutive days. It wouldn't be near as cold as -5 so I think we would stay warm and toasty with our Mr. Buddy, elec hookup and a bottle of wine. :)   Also great tip about lubing the storage door a bit before using. I grew up in Northwest Indiana so I know those winters can be brutal.

How did it go? I watch the Weather Channel and see that the west coast keeps getting hammered.

The thing that most surprised me is that I haven't had any problems with the outside shower in subzero weather. I thought that would be the achilles heel

Hmmmm . . . Maybe you haven't been taking your showers outside in the sub-zero weather?

Haven't ventured to Crystal Mtn yet with 'the rig' (only name we've come up with so far). more snow expected here in Seattle tonight and tomorrow. But 'the rig' is tucked away in our back yard with a heavy duty tarp over it and small heater inside to keep it at 45-50 deg. A trip to the ski area is still in the plans tho! Happy Travels to all. I envy you all in the warmer climates right now but I do love snow too! :)
