Four Old Dogs and an Old Lady

For 46 years, since college graduation, I have had this fantasy of driving across the country to NY/Mexico. So this month I bought an '87, 22FL with 92.000 miles, after weeks of search, lurking, reading, and surfing.  Many salaams to Andy Baird, for his informative posts.  Oldjerseylady even sent me an owner's manual. I suddenly felt like a member of the club.

My wife said she'd take a pass, and my kid brother, age 63, said he was game, but how about the dogs? His a golden retriever, mine a black lab).  Sounded good to me, so on or about January 15, we head out, for six weeks. Our tentative itinerary: Washington DC, Roanoke VA, Nashvill TN, Birmingham AL, New Orleans LA, San Antonio TX, Monterey Mex, and San Miguel D'Allende.
I will take my laptop, configured for wi-fi(), a CB radio, a digital camera and a cell phone 917 679 2702.  We would like to meet other LD owners along the way.
All advice, suggestions, cautions, invitations or adventure prospects will be welcomed.  I am getting more and more excited as departure day draws closer.

Love hear from any and all,

Regards John Aigner oLDog87

Hi John,
It sounds like a wonderful trip. There are some great LD folks along that route and so many great places to visit.
Here's some advice off the top of my head for the Mexico portion.  We are in San Miguel right now and staying at the La Siesta RV park which is a large fenced field with trees behind a motel of the same name.
It's close in to the historical center but not so close that you'll get stuck in the narrow streets.  Cost is $140 pesos a night, less than $14 US depending on the exchange rate. Good electric, dump and non-potable water included. Great spot for dogs.
Heading south from San Antonio not far before Laredo, turn off on the toll road to the Columbia Crossing.  It's marked and the toll is a few dollars.  It's a much easier border crossing for RVs, everything is easy to get to and parking is ample.  From there you can follow the signs to get on the toll road for Monterey. We've never stopped in Monterey as it is a huge, huge city with lots of industry, frantic traffic and miles of suburbs around it.  I would prefer Saltillo which is just a little farther as a more manageable sized city for a first stop and it has a beautiful centro.  There is a toll bypass of the city of Monterey that shoots you around the city and onto the road to Saltillo.  There is also a free road that is good that does the same.
The tolls can get expensive but sometimes avoiding a big city easily is worth it.

Get a copy of Mike and Terri Church's book on Mexican Camping and follow their route when coming into San Miguel. You most definitely do not want to end up in the center of this beautiful old colonial city with narrow cobblestone streets.  Their route will take you around and directly to either of the RV parks. The other park is said to be very beautiful and more rural but it is a few miles outside of town.  You can walk or take a cab from the La Siesta to the center of town.  We went in by cab tonight and it was $20pesos each way, less than $2 US.
It's a lot less hassle than driving even a small car and parking is very tough.

I think it is wonderful that you are following your dream, have a fantastic time.

Jonna, in San Miguel

If you are tired of interstate highways by the time you get to Nashville, TN and don't have any specific interest in Birmingham, AL, you might enjoy getting on the Natchez Trace in Nashville and taking a more leisurely trip for a while.  You could exit the Trace at I-55 in Jackson, MS and continue to New Orleans or go West on I-20.

Let me know if you plan to come through the Jackson, MS area and I will try and assist you any way I can.

Sounds like a fun trip.

John - wish you were coming through Albuquerque - we'd love to meet you. But as long as you're taking your laptop and can stay connected with the group, you'll meet up with people. Many of us will be out prowling around the country. and will likely be where you are.

Just keep telling us (the list) where you are, and whallah! Someone will see that you're coming near where they are. Lattes all around!!
