Being bald, there's no hair cushion for my noggin when I run into things. Being somewhat uncoordinated doesn't help matters. All this leads me to ask, "Am I the only one who's bonked his head, when climbing onto the overhead bed, on that silly crank handle that extends way too far down from the escape hatch?" I did it once and then cringed each time I climbed up thereafter.

My fix for this "problem" is in the photo section in the "Yonder" album, labeled "low profile escape hatch knob".

That hatch is a huge conductive heat sink, so we have covered it with a magnetically attached insulated cover for cold weather use (most of our camping). Of course, you can still bonk the cover, but no more likely than any other part of the ceiling it's flush with.
