Quickie question re. the 2620:  I'm leaning towards the 2620 because there doesn't appear to be a way to download from a Mac to the 2610, right?   But if the 2620 comes "pre loaded", how does one get/install updates?

Thanks -- and sorry if this particular question has already been answered, Lorna

In theory, you could do it by running the MapSource software under Virtual PC on a Mac, but I don't know anybody who's tried. Considering how many hours it takes to transfer the map data from a real PC to the 2610, and the fact that VPC's software emulation is much slower than a real PC, I think that even if it worked, it would be impractically slow.
The easiest way for a Mac user to get map data loaded onto either the StreetPilot 2610 or (in the case of updates) the 2620 is simply to find a friend who has a PC and borrow the use of it long enough to do the data transfer. Bear in mind that you'll probably only be doing this every couple of years, so it's not that big a deal.
I think your instinct is right, Lorna: the 2620 is your best bet. It will work as soon as you take it out of the box, and you won't even have to think about updates for years to come.

In theory you could download updated map data to either the 2610 or 2620 from a Mac running Virtual PC, but I don't know of anyone who has tried it...and even if it worked, I fairly certain it would be painfully slow--it's slow enough on a real PC! A better solution would be to do what I did: find a friend with a PC when you need to do an update.
I'd say the 2620 is the better solution for you--that way you can start using it immediately, and you won't even have to think about this whole downloading issue for years.

For those looking for a Garmin 2620, the Wal Mart website has them for $965.44 plus $6.78 shipping before the $100.00 rebate.

Check out www.anchorexpress.com.  They carry most all the popular GPS units at fairly decent pricing.

I am single having been divorced 22 years. Sometimes when I know where I'm going I intentionally go a different way than that which Garmin recommends just so I can tick her (the speaker) off. My way of reminding myself of what it used to be like.

I've often thought that Garmin is missing the boat on their language choices for their GPS units. Fer instance, they could have "The obnoxious female voice" (e.g. "Oh for cryin' out loud, can't you follow simple directions - - RE-calculating!"). Or, for the really submissive types, we could have the "Foul mouth and dominating" voice (I'm not gonna suggest any examples of this one).
In aviation, my Garmin 396 has terrain warnings. If I approach a mountain the girl inside says, "Terrain, terrain, PULL-UP, PULL-UP!" 'Course, seems that when flying my Husky, I'm approaching terrain all the time, so I disable warnings unless I'm flying at night and really need them. Same thing on a short and relatively steep approach, such as is often done for "off field" landings in a bush plane to river gravel bars etc. Then she get's her underwear in a wad and goes berserk, (Garmin should program her to say, "Descent rate, descent rate . . . scream! Oh, we're all gonna die!"). Okay, I'd disable that too, but at least there'd be some entertainment value . . .

Yup! Guess that's why I was prompted to rename mine "Ms Calculation".

This must come under the classification of misery loves company. They quit making updates for our old Garmin Quest some years ago. Since then every Wal*Mart in the country has moved. So we thought we would get an new GPS and be up-to-date. In addition to directions being more flakey on the new unit, it was re-calculating after we got into the Wal*Mart parking lot the other day. While the lane assist is nice, I trust the Nuvi MUCH LESS than the old Quest.
