Let's Be Careful, Folks!

I used to belong to another forum devoted to a particular brand of computer of which I am an afficionado, and watched it disintegrate and (for all practical purposes) fall apart because of posts not unlike some of the ones we're seeing here recently. In the case of the other forum, it was all over politics. Personal views led to rigid & hardened opinions -- which relentlessly led to screaming diatribes -- which (with the fury of a wildfire) led to personal attacks -- which increasingly became more and more viscious.
Eventually, many people (myself included) just left that forum.

I'm seeing a pattern here which is beginning to look uncomfortably familiar. Calling those who differ with you Members of a Cult!!! Denigrating the valued experience of others. People setting themselves up as kind of "leaders of the opposition." And it's clear from the "tone" of at least one or two of the posters that this is not quite entirely in jest. Wish that it were, but the anger and petulance that's coming out says otherwise.

In a way, it's been fun over the years to watch the competitively split opinions (from a multitude of "experts") over levelers, valve stems, finishing polish, tires, tire pressures, upholstery & carpet colors, computer systems, gps, window treatments, heaters, etc.
But in the past, even though opinions were sometimes strong, it more-or-less stayed "civil."
The current discussion is getting dangerously close to not being so.
I like freedom of discussion and would hate to see Andy feel the need to step in and moderate more heavily. So... can we lighten up a little?
Some may think I'm taking this more seriously than necessary, that's it's all just in good, clean fun. I hope so. Just don't want to see a repeat of what happened in my other forum.
Thanks.

David

I'm going to echo David's sentiments here. I have really good friends on both sides of this issue, and would really love to see everyone take it a bit easier when certain subjects come up.

A psychiatrist friend of mine said that much humor is just thinly disguised anger, and this is what some of this is looking like, to me.

This is such a great group of people - the information is always terrific - the help always just a 'send-button' away, the value and pleasure of sharing fun places to travel, and the actual friends that I've met and come to love and value over the years can not be described.

happy(er) trails - Sarah

It has already crossed that line, and David hit the nail on the head about the reasons.
Calling people who disagree with you 'cult members' is not a legitimate argument. And as several have pointed out, this disagreement has gone way beyond any legitimate discussion of tire stems. As Tom said, "The only trashing I have seen here is amongst ourselves." That's a shame; this group has very rarely descended to that level.
I said a couple of days ago that had no plans to stifle discussion, but the recent inflammatory posts on this topic (which I've deleted) leave me little choice. Unless there is new information--e.g., Chuck "The Tireman" lowers his prices, or newer technology becomes available--I'm going to consider this topic closed and delete any future posts that rehash the same old stuff.
As for the tire stem (and extender) FAQ, only one person has stepped forward to offer help with it. Is it really the case that you'd rather bash each other in public than make a useful contribution? If anyone else wants to help, by all means email me your information so that we can have a balanced writeup. By 'information' I mean info about tires, valves, stems and their care; not about the good or bad experience you had with an installer.

I don't say much here but this place is starting to remind me of some of my old buddies that kept killing themselves off - the Hatfields and McCoys.

I have been trashing a lot of posts lately without reading them.

Greetings to all I'm offering sincere apologies for my bad manners, bad behavior and the nastiness I've brought into your households this past week.

My multiple bad experiences with the Tireman remain my one and ONLY negative Lazy Daze experience, and unfortunately, my experiences involved much more than squabbling about business hours/appointments.
When the valve stem debate appears again and again and again, those feelings resurface and all those negative memories (and the worst of me!) just start simmering again.  I wish those feelings could just go away and die a peaceful death.  But that's my problem, not yours, and I regret bringing my problems to this forum.

Unfortunately, I hit the "send" button before sleeping on my last message, because this morning I'm very sorry.

Peace, Lorna

Well, Lorna, we ALL make mistakes, and I've made my share.

The difference is what we do AFTER we make a mistake.
You've shown by your posting that you are the classy woman we know you to be.

I'm sorry to hear you had the bad experience you did.

best,  paul

best, paul, AKA Kathleen, Kathleen and others who have written off list ... I'm grateful today that the "f" word is alive, well, and functioning full power.  You all are like extended family to me, and I wouldn't be enjoying my retirement without the support, information, and encouragement I've received from the folks who post on this forum for lo these many years.  Your tolerance, understanding and forgiveness is humbling, even for an uppity woman!
