older LD's - flourescent noise...
Yahoo Message Number: 2588
After ignoring the issue for years, I made an effort to cure a noise problem from our kitchen under-counter Thin-Lite flourescent that caused noise bars and a buzz on our T.V. In addition, the fixture itself produced an audible buzz. This is an '83 FL model.

On removing the bulbs and popping out the internal reflector, I found a capacitor on the circuit board had blown up. Replacing it (220uF, 35V electrolytic) involved removing the fixture, drilling out a couple of pop-rivets, then re-installing the board with new pop-rivets after replacing the capacitor.

The repair was successful - no noise now of any sort. Since the failure was symptomatic of the electrolyte drying out in the capacitor - usually age-related - I elected to check out the other flourescent fixtures. Two of the other three also had the same blown cap, which I also relaced.

Therefore, those of you with older models which have the Thin-Lite brand flourescents would do well to do the quick check - the failure produces a nice mess, so is easy to spot.
