Put a deposit on a 26.5' mid-bath P1

If you are wondering how I knew the solar part numbers in my last post, it was because I had the latest LD manual in front of me. We were in Montclair last weekend and put a deposit on a 26.5' mid-bath, blue exterior, blue interior. Now comes the hard part, waiting! We keep joking that we should send LD email asking them if they have our chassis yet.

I'll try to give something that resembles a trip report. Hopefully it will be of help to someone considering a LD purchase.

First, the brochure and video really helped. The various layouts were as I imagined. I don't think it is a major risk mailing in an order without a visit. According to LD, they get quite a few orders that way.

After going through all of the show room models, we watched a video sent by a LD owner. Apparently the owner fell asleep, went off the side of the road and rolled his LD on to its roof along with his small truck dinghy. The owner took a video of his wrecked LD at the crash site and later after the tow (he and his wife were not hurt.) The only broken window was the rear window broken by the truck. The cab over bed area was bent down covering about a third of the front window.
Other then that, the structure was intact and not crushed. Pretty impressive testinony to LD structure strength.

We flew in from DFW on a Friday so we could see the factory in operation. I didn't get a lot out of touring the factory, but it was fun anyway. Saw the structures without the aluminum skin. On one of the units, you could see the extra insulation option around the holding tanks. On another unit, I asked about why there were two LP tanks. The answer was that it was a diesel and the second tank is for the generator. In an adjacent building, they were replacing the roof silicon on a 10-12 year old LD for a owner that brought it in for the service work.

We poked around and asked a lot of questions during the two and a half hours we were there Friday. Here are some of my observations and notes:

- grey/black water valves: some models have a combined valve, others have separate valves. LD says that customer preference is for one valve. The mid-bath will always have two valves because of the layout. I prefer having the valves separate, but it isn't a big enough deal that it would influence my selection of a layout.

- spare tire: You would assume the spare tire is always under the spare tire cover, but that isn't the case. It depends on the floor plan. The spare tire is in the back right storage compartment in the mid-bath. The wasted space under the empty spare tire cover is now bugging me. Seems like I could epoxy hooks in there to at least hang hazard triangles or something similar.

-inverter: I was a little confused about this, but I think I understand now. If you get a coach with a 13" TV, there is a small inverter in the TV compartment to power the TV.
If you get an entertainment center, there is a 400W inverter to provide AC to the 20 inch TV. When I saw the 400W inverter listed, I thought you might have the ability to switch between the TV and an AC outlet in case you wanted to run a small AC appliance. That isn't the case. The inverter is just for the TV. If you want AC while on batteries, you can order a large inverter as an option.

-shocks: LD will install Bilstein shocks as an option. LD feels like the ride with the factory shocks is fine, but they will install the Bilstein's for you. I decided to stick with the factory shocks, but I might try Bilsteins after the factory shocks get some wear on them. LD's attitude is that their product is just about right the way it is, but they will try to accommodate you. If you live in the area and want a inexpensive set of new factory Ford F450 truck shocks, LD sells the set of four for $49.95.

-midbath pantry: the pantry is new for the mid-bath and isn't shown in the brochure layout drawing. The mid-bath pantry is in the wall closest to the door facing the fron
