Report from Fairbanks, AK
Yahoo Message Number: 24139
In case anyone is traveling north to Alaska, here's a summary of my trip so far. Please email me for more details than this short report. My trip was from Ketchikan, Alaska up to Fairbanks.
The ferry to take through the inside passage is the Columbia - nothing rattles so you can sleep in a quiet stateroom. Next is the Kenicott. The Columbia has a restaurant and a fast food place. The food is better on this boat than on the others. I still brought my own grub and camped out in the stateroom. I didn't want to argue with the forest service representative who always has an agenda for a roadless forest, no timber harvest, no fishing, etc. etc.
The place to stay with the RV in Haines is the Hitch Up RV. The folk were friendly and the place was immaculate. I barely pulled in when I was greeted by name because I had made reservations and shown immediately to a place to park for the night despite two other rigs in line (w/o reservations)
The roads are not bad up to Haines Jct BC. But from Haines Jct to the U.S Border the is a lot of construction. Slow road, much dust and plenty of mosquitos. These are the trophy mosquitos, not the catch & release. And then there are the no-see-ums and the deer flies. The key to survival is to bathe in Muskol. And if you do get bitten -- use Preparation H. What the commercials say is true -- shrinks the swelling and there is no itch.
Currently staying at the Rivers Edge in Fairbanks for the 4th then driving down to Anchorage & Soldatna

Happy Fourth !!
